K-State Research and Extension News

Sept. 23, 2021

In this video, K-State Research and Extension soil microbiologist and University Distinguished Professor Chuck Rice discusses the importance of soil health to farm crops, particularly during periods of stress (such as heat stress or drought).

K-State has conducted an experiment in corn fields over 32 years to study the effects of adding organic matter (carbon) to the soil.

Rice says that by adding organic matter in the form of compost, the soil is able to hold more moisture and thus is able to supply water to the plant, even during periods of stress.
