UNUSUAL 4-H PROJECTS
Thanks to those of you who have informed us about unusual 4-H projects: As part of our pre-state fair coverage, we've written about a robotic dog; a creative county fair brochure; a pet buffalo; a 4-H youth who re-wired his county's fairgrounds; and more.

These short, but interesting stories, generate interest in 4-H programs. If you come across an interesting project and/or human interest story that could be a part of our pre-fair coverage, please share it with Nancy Peterson (e-mail:  npeterso@oznet.ksu.edu ), or call the K-State Research and Extension news office at 785-532-5806.  --Pat Melgares pmelgare@oznet.ksu.edu

All Extension Agents, Specialists, and Administrators are eligible to make grant requests to the Alpha Rho Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Phi Extension Endowment Fund. Grant requests can be made to support professional development or innovative educational programs.

Grant Proposals are due October 2, 2000 to Steve Fisher. Additional grant applications are also available from Steve Fisher, Chair, ESP Endowment Fund, 201 Umberger Hall, KSU, Manhattan, KS 66506; 785- 532-5800; or  sfisher@oznet.ksu.edu .

Last year, seven projects were awarded for a total of $3,475. Grant amounts ranged from $250-$750. The Endowment Fund Board of Trustees will review the proposals during the 2000 K-State Research & Extension Annual Conference, and grant recipients will be announced at the ESP Awards Banquet. This is also a good time to remind you of the current campaign to increase the Endowment Fund. Tickets are available for a week's vacation in a condo at either Branson, MO., or Williamsburg, VA; sky box seats for the November 4 Iowa State-K-State home football game; and an auction to precede the Awards Banquet at the 2000 Conference. READING-AND-ROUNDTABLE DIALOGUE SESSION (SUCCESSFUL INTELLIGENCE)
Robert Wilson, Extension Associate, Agricultural Economics; and Dan Kahl, Extension Associate, Biographical & Agricultural Engineering; are facilitating a Reading-And-Roundtable Team Dialogue Session on the book: Successful Intelligence: How Practical and Creative Intelligence Determine Success in Life by Robert J. Sternberg.

The Team Dialogue Session is an informal, book luncheon discussion scheduled on Friday, September 22, 2000, 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., in Room 204 of the K-State Union.

In reading Successful Intelligence and discussing it with your colleagues in the Team Dialogue Session, you'll discover:

  • Why your creative and practical intelligence may have nothing to do with your IQ;
  • Specific steps for developing creative and practical intelligence;
  • The key personality traits essential for optimum creative performance; and,
  • How successful intelligence can be activated--and made to work for you.

The book may be purchased by contacting Von O'Neil at the K-State Union Bookstore, 532-6583; or it may be requested on a loan basis from the Office of Professional Development's Lifelong Learning Resource Center, 532-4370.

Successful Intelligence is a paperback book, published by PLUME in 1997, consists of 303 pages, and costs $12.95 at the K-State Union Bookstore.

MOST AMAZING MOM ESSAY CONTEST
Please share this opportunity with your 4-H members as a great way to recognize their communication skills and highlight 4-H at the same time. National 4-H Council has joined forces with Redbook Magazine and "Inside Edition" to host an essay contest -- and we need your help in promoting this event within your 4-H membership! National 4-H Council will be promoting this contest for the next several months, but special emphasis will be made during National 4-H week, October 1-7, 2000. Please include participation in this contest as part of your 4-H week activities. Essay winners will have the opportunity to appear on "Inside Edition," and their essays will be printed in the March 2001 issue of Redbook Magazine. This is a great opportunity for 4-H'ers to show the nation what we are made of! For more information go to  http://www.fourhcouncil.edu/Market/whatsnew/redbookmomessay  starting Friday August 4, 2000. --Steve Fisher sfisher@oznet.ksu.edu

STATE FAIR PARKING UPDATE
We have received several calls from Extension staff asking what hang tags to order for 4-H members giving demonstrations or participating in 4-H Showcase at the State Fair. According to KSF Competitive Exhibits Director Debbie Anderson, participants may use delivery/release hang tags IF they are dated for the day they are giving their presentation. When you place your order for admission tickets and hang tags, request them for the specific days your members will need them. Lindy Lindquist  llindqui@oznet.ksu.edu

PUBLICATIONS/PRODUCTION SERVICES UPDATE
Special Order: Order forms for the 2000 Farm Management Guides were sent Friday, August 4. Please note that these orders are due by Wednesday, August 23. The quick turnaround is necessary in order to meet printing deadlines for these special publications, many of which are updated each year. Delivery date is set for November 15. County and area offices will receive one complementary set of new or revised guides. Additional complete sets of new/revised guides are available for $10.20.

Work Sheet to Come: Watch for the 2001 Existing Publications Work Sheet, set to be distributed with the August 11 mailing. The work sheet is intended to be used as a planning tool only. Order forms for publications to be delivered in 2001 will be sent later.

Title Change: Please note that the titles of a fact sheet and leader's guide in the 2001 FACS Series have changed. MF2475 and (previously "What's New in Food Technology?"
