APPLICANTS SOUGHT FOR KARL PROGRAM
Application for the sixth offering of the advanced training course
is now open with training for KARL Class VI (2001-2003) beginning in
August of next year. Agents and specialists are asked to nominate key
emerging leaders so that the nominee can receive the in-depth applicant
profile form required for screening by the all-volunteer board of
directors.
Forms are due in the KARL office no later
than March 15 of 2001. On-line application is also available. Candidates
may visit the programs web site at http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/karl
to apply on-line and view the archives and information. The screening
process will isolate 45-50 of the top candidates to be interviewed by
regional subcommittees the first full week of May with the class named
in June.
Each class is composed of 30 individuals
(no more than one individual per family). If Class VI is like previous
classes, they will predominately be between the ages of 25 and 55 and as
required, will have demonstrated leadership ability. --Jack

FACS UPDATE FOR KANSAS STATE FAIR
Help!! As of last week, the number of volunteers for many committees
is way
down. I still need six Food Clerks for Friday, entry day, and 16
volunteers for FACS Quiz Bowl for the last Sunday. No one has volunteered
to organize food educational exhibits and gift baskets for check-out, or
for Arts and Crafts check-out. Beth Hinshaw also is still short Clothing
judging clerks. I need volunteers for the Hunger House for all day on
Sunday, September 10, and the morning of Sunday, September 17.
I've had this question several times
recently, so for your information, Gift Food Baskets and Specialty Foods
ARE NOT SOLD AT THE FOOD SALE. They are to be picked up with other
exhibits after the Fair. --Steve Fisher sfisher@oznet.ksu.edu
4-H ESSENTIAL PRINCIPLES WORKSHOP
We encourage you to be recruiting your team to participate in this
training workshop, September 30 and October 1 at Rock Springs 4-H Center.
Staff of the Teel Institute will be introducing 20 new activities that can
be used in the 4-H club meeting, and other programming experiences to
strengthen character education. A letter and team application were sent to
all counties/districts several weeks ago. Applications are due August 15.
If you are working on a team, and don't have it all put together by the
15th, please let Jim Adams or me know of your intent. --Steve Fisher sfisher@oznet.ksu.edu
KEAFCS SCHOLARSHIP WINNER
The KEAFCS Scholarship Winner has been announced by the committee. Pat
Gerhardt, Cloud County CEA-FACS will receive the $150 award for this year.
The "Friend of Extension Family and Consumer Sciences" award
will be presented to Sherry Kriegshauser during Friendship Night this
Fall. Sherry is a program specialist with the American Heart Association
and provides new and innovative prevention programs related to heart
disease and stroke.
The scholarship committee thanks all who
applied for awards this year and wishes each one the best as they pursue
professional development goals. --Donna R. Krug dkrug@oznet.ksu.edu
4-H RECORD BOOK CD ROM FOR SALE AT
KANSAS STATE FAIR
During the 1999 Kansas State Fair, a 4-H parent suggested we have
the 4-H Record Book CD available to purchase there. So, you may want to
inform your families that we will have a supply for sale at the 4-H
Information booth in the 4-H Exhibit building. Cost is still only $4.00
for the form-filler record program, plus the ability to preview and/or
print any of the 517 4-H publications on the 4-H Library portion of the
CD. --Steve Fisher sfisher@oznet.ksu.edu
KANSAS STATE FAIR FOOD DRIVE
Please encourage your 4-H families and all other county citizens who
might be attending the 2000 Kansas State Fair to bring along a can or
box of non-perishable food for the state-wide food drive. Food can be
dropped off at the Hunger House, located inside the 4-H Exhibit
building, or at the Channel 12, KWCH TV station, just north of the Fair
Administration Building. Food will be distributed across the state to
food pantries and shelters by the Kansas FoodBank Warehouse.
Poverty statistics related to hunger can
be found in the publication, 4-H 677, Level 4, Lesson title, "Walk
in My Shoes," page 31. Extension News will be sending a story on
hunger in Kansas and promoting the food drive and Hunger House to the
Kansas Press Association in late August. KKSU will also be airing a
radio interview which I did. Channel 12, KWCH TV, out of Wichita, will
be doing a promotion prior to and during the Fair.
I've heard that several counties have
conducted local food drives associated with their county fairs or other
events. Please let me know if your county has been involved and the
results. I'd like to report that impact to the Kansas Health Foundation,
who provided the Recognition Grant which funded the Hunger
curriculum. --Steve Fisher sfisher@oznet.ksu.edu
