NEW SUPPORTING MATERIALS TO MEET YOUR
NEEDS
Over the years, K-State Research and Extension has produced some
educational supporting materials to help increase awareness of our
organization, when faculty/staff are participating in county fairs and
other meetings. Since 1998, the items of choice have been the Core
Mission Theme poster and the K-State Research and Extension brochure.
Other supporting items include pocket calendars, bookmarks, pens, and
buttons.
Currently, we have two supporting items
available. The K-State Research and Extension purple and white buttons
can be ordered through Janet Wenderott for $.04 apiece. We have also
ordered purple and white Bic Clic Stic pens with the K-State Research
and Extension logo on one side and the "Knowledge for Life"
logo on the other. These will also be available through Janet Wenderott,
for $.28 apiece.
We need to produce new supporting
materials, in addition to the pens and buttons. The Marketing Advisory
Committee would appreciate your input. What educational supporting items
would you like us to produce, i.e. another poster, a new brochure, or
what? Please let us know what you would prefer, so we can provide the
materials you want and need. To send suggestions or to order buttons or
pens, please e-mail Janet Wenderott at jwendero@oznet.ksu.edu
. --Bob Furbee bfurbee@oznet.ksu.edu

A POND CAN HOLD
WATER THROUGH A DROUGHT
With the drought conditions the last year in much of Kansas, little
runoff has been received to replenish farm ponds. The stress conditions
that we have been dealt make the weaknesses of some ponds apparent. Many
are in need of maintenance: to add water depth, to reduce seepage, or to
improve water quality. An excellent reference to help identify what needs
to be done and the basic principles to follow is Agricultural Handbook No.
590 "Ponds -- Planning, Design, and Construction."
There can always be weather conditions that
are more extreme than our designs are meant to encounter. Yet a good pond
should hold water through a dry season. But most older ponds have
accumulated so much sediment that a water supply can no longer last
through a dry spell. And many new, or at least not so old ponds, leak so
bad that they cannot hold water for extended periods. Lack of depth and
leaky conditions are the two biggest weaknesses of ponds. A dry pond is
the ideal one for repair.
Handbook 590 addresses most of the
questions that I have had over the years about ponds. A limited number of
this recently revised USDA, Natural Resources Conservation Service
handbook have been received by Extension Biological and Agricultural
Engineering. Since we do not have enough to supply all counties and
because some counties do not have many ponds, we will provide a copy of
the handbook upon request. To order your free copy, contact Cindy ccasper@bae.ksu.edu

WE MADE A DIFFERENCE!!
Congratulations and thanks to all Kansans who contributed to help
build the Hunger House at the State Fair. We collected 4,487 pounds of
food, or nearly 2 1/2 times more than last year! A special thanks to Al
Davis for motivating his Junior leaders to collect more than 3,000
pounds at the Johnson County Fair. Al had to "pay off" by
allowing them to bleach his hair.
This food was picked up by the Kansas
FoodBank Warehouse of Wichita, and will be distributed back across
Kansas to food pantries and shelters. We will not have the Hunger House
in the 4-H Exhibit building for the 2001 Kansas State Fair, but we do
encourage you to continue local food drives, or food can be dropped off
at the Hunger House which is tentatively planned to be at the Channel 12
TV station at the 2001 State Fair. --Steve Fisher sfisher@oznet.ksu.edu
$20,000 IN SCHOLARSHIP MONEY AVAILABLE
Here's another scholarship opportunity for your 4-H'ers who are
considering a career in the beef industry. The Chicago Mercantile
Exchange and the National Cattlemen's Foundation are once again offering
scholarships to students who intend to pursue careers in the beef
industry. For all the rules and application procedures, please visit: www.beef.org/business/production/awards/scholarship.htm
or contact Audrey Nixon, Associate Director, Leadership Development and
Services, phone: 303-850-3317, or fax: 303-770-7745. --Steve Fisher sfisher@oznet.ksu.edu
NEW INVOICE
PROCEDURE FOR COUNTY OFFICES
Beginning this week, county offices will be able to pay for publications
they receive from the invoice enclosed with their shipments. The new
invoices deduct all approved expenditures from the publication allocation
balance and print the amount due for appropriate shipping or sale
publications. In addition, the remaining allocation balance will be listed
at the bottom of each invoice. We hope this new invoice will help make it
easier for county personnel to monitor their allocation purchases and
publication payments. --Nancy Peavler npeavler@oznet.ksu.edu
REQUESTS FOR
SPECIALIST ASSISTANCE
Agents who submitted Requests for Specialist Assistance and have not
received a specialist's response should contact the appropriate specialist
for an immediate response. --Marie Blythe mblythe@oznet.ksu.edu
