YOUTH DEVELOPMENT POSTERS AND STICKERS AVAILABLE AT 4-H UPDATES
The "Connect the Dots" 4-H Youth Development posters and stickers distributed during Annual Conference will be available during the 4-H Area Updates held in November. Provided by OPEN-K (Opportunities for Prevention Education and Networking in Kansas) through the Expanded Delivery Models of 4-H Youth Development Action Team, "Connect the Dots" recognizes the contributions made by Research and Extension youth development professionals towards building healthy Kansas kids.

As part of the Youth, Family and Community Development Core Mission Theme, the posters and stickers can be used to market Research and Extension's youth development work internally (with colleagues, office professionals, volunteers). "Connect the Dots" can also help to position 4-H Youth Development with external youth-serving organizations (e.g., Boys and Girls Clubs, YouthFriends, Scouting, Juvenile Justice, etc.). The ultimate goal is the identification and recognition that K-State Research and Extension 4-H Youth Development professionals are the "go-to" people for local youth development expertise!

In addition to the posters and stickers, local faculty should be looking ahead to receiving from the Expanded Delivery Models team other information (journals, publications) that will assist them in their on-going professional development as youth development professionals. If you have questions, please contact Diane Mack, Jana Hackney or Elaine Johannes. --Elaine Johannes ejohanne@oznet.ksu.edu .

SPANISH TRANSLATION OF "HELP YOURSELF TO A HEALTHY HOME"
The national Home*A*Syst office completed a Spanish translation of the booklet "Help Yourself to a Healthy Home." Soon an electronic version will be posted on the web for viewing or downloading. The national office is in the process of selecting a computer programmer and graphic designer to create an on-line interactive version of  "Help Yourself..." TWO OPPORTUNITIES TO RECOGNIZE 4-H'ERS WITH OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY SERVICE:
Colgate Youth for America
Do you know an outstanding young person who deserves to be recognized for their efforts to improve their world? If so, make sure they know about the Colgate Youth for America program. Now entering its 28th year, 4-H and five other youth organizations, partner with Colgate-Palmolive to recognize the nation's top youth. Additional information and this year's application are now accessible through the Colgate-Palmolive site at: http://www.colgate.com/cp/ColgateImages.class/press_room . Check out this great opportunity to recognize youth in your community.

NBA TeamUp All-Star 2001 Awards Again Accepting Applications
The NBA TeamUp and Youth Service America again are joining together to recognize outstanding young people who make a difference in their communities through volunteer service. Applications are being accepted from high school students (grades 9-12, ages 13 and older) residing in the United States and Canada. Applicants must be individuals who have engaged in volunteer service in the year 2000. In February, three TeamUp Honorees will receive round-trip airfare for two to Washington DC and be presented an award, including a $1000 grant to fund a project for Global Youth Service Day 2001 and a $1000 donation to the non-profit charity of their choice. This will happen during the NBA TeamUp Celebration, a special TV event saluting youth volunteers held during NBA All-Star Weekend. It will be simulcast on NBC, TNT, Nickelodeon, and BET.

In its fifth year, NBA TeamUp has provided more then 200,000 youth with service opportunities, and recognized more then 40,000 youth for outstanding dedication. The NBA and its players continue to promote volunteering and service through public service announcements, television specials, and motivational visits by NBA players and team representatives. This year also marked the debut of the NBA's 2,000 in 2000 pledge, where each NBA team will engage at least 2,000 young people in community service during the 2000-2001 season. For more information check out www.SERVEnet.org  or www.nba.com . You can also contact Karen Larson by e-mail at atklarson@ysa.org . --Steve Fisher sfisher@oznet.ksu.edu

RESOURCES TO SUPPORT THE HUNGER CURRICULUM: Free Hunger Management Resources for Educators
Oxfam America's "Fast for a World Harvest" campaign has been raising consciousness about poverty and hunger in communities across the country for 26 years, with nearly 2,000 groups nationwide planning annual Oxfam events. November 16, the Thursday before Thanksgiving, is the kick-off date for the 2000 "Fast for a World Harvest" campaign. Funds raised will support grassroots development projects of poor and marginalized people, including refugees, women, indigenous people, landless peasants, and survivors of war and natural disasters in the U.S. and around the world. With more than 1.3 billion people worldwide living on less than a dollar a day, and nearly 800 million people without enough to eat, support for community-based, self-help programs is vital.

You can choose to:
* Fast for a day, skip a meal, or give up something you like, and get others to sponsor you.
* Organize a Dining Hall fast, a benefit talent show or ask a local band to perform. Organize a Hunger Banquet: A large meal is prepared and divided among guests in proportions representing the earnings of high-, middle- and low-income groups. By random drawing, guests join one of the three groups: 15 percent receive a gourmet meal, 30 percent eat rice and beans, and 55 percent get only rice and water. The Hunger Banquet dramatizes the unequal distribution of resources throughout the world.
* Become involved in our new Fair Trade Coffee campaign.

Contact Oxfam for FREE organizing materials for these and other event ideas at fast@oxfamamerica.org  or call 800-597-FAST. Materials can be downloaded from our web site at http://www.oxfamamerica.org . --Steve Fisher
