TECHNOLOGY AND CHANGE...
There is a provocative article in the October 2000 (Vol. 38 No. 5) issue of the Journal of Extension: 'Extension: On the Brink of Extinction or Distinction?'  Take a look at http://www.joe.org/joe/2000october/comm1.html .  --Dick Wootton rwootton@oznet.ksu.edu

MARKETING WEB SITE
It seems the Marketing web site address was inadvertently left off the message in last week's Tuesday letter. The correct address is http://intranet.oznet.ksu.edu/marketing . You can also access it through the Intranet homepage (intranet.oznet.ksu.edu) through the Secure Web section. -- Bob Furbee bfurbee@oznet.ksu.edu , Steven Graham sgraham@oznet.ksu.edu , and Linda Sleichter lsleicht@oznet.ksu.edu

WATERSHED SPECIALISTS ON BOARD
With the advent of Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) comes the opportunity for education and information programs on water quality issues within defined, priority watersheds in Kansas. As one step in strengthening the overall educational efforts in those watersheds, five individuals have been hired to focus their program efforts on helping the local citizenry within those watersheds to achieve the TMDL goals. Those individuals hired into the watersheds include:

Mike Christian, Blue River Basin Watershed
Milton Krainbill, Delaware River Basin Watershed
Doug Musick, Kansas River Basin Watershed
Ron Graber, Lower Arkansas River Basin Watershed
Bob Frisbie, Upper Arkansas River Basin Watershed

These five individuals will be working with Extension agents and interested agencies, organizations, and individuals within these watersheds to implement appropriate strategies to achieve the outcomes desired within each watershed. Funding for these positions is through a multiple source grant, including KDHE (EPA 319), KDA, SCC, and K-State Research & Extension. The grant project is slated to operate for 5 years. --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@oznet.ksu.edu

WEB SITE ON FARM & RANCH DECISIONS
Thank goodness we do these kinds of efforts to put information and ideas together on the severity of farm and ranch situations, so that it will rain!

But, I would still point you to the special web site that has been created with audio discussions on Farm & Ranch Decisions following the dry conditions; low crop yields in some areas; low crop commodity prices; forage, grasslands, and livestock water becoming critically short in some areas; and the overall increase in energy costs affecting farm and ranch costs.

Hopefully, the information and ideas shared will be helpful in considering local programming for this fall and winter. The web site is http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/kksu/decisions.htm .

I'd like your feedback on this approach to sharing information and ideas through audio on the internet. Questions and comments are welcome. --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@oznet.ksu.edu

ANNUAL CONFERENCE PRESENTATIONS ON THE WEB
Well, another successful Annual Conference is over. Before that fabulous presentation gets lost in the cobwebs of your hard drive, consider posting it on the web. Visit the web site for details on submitting manuscripts, notes, and slide presentations: http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/ac2000/ --Susan Bale sbale@oznet.ksu.edu

IET USING NEW HELPDESK SOFTWARE
Information and Educational Technology is now using the campus Remedy Helpdesk software to track your technology problems and questions better. This software requires us to input more information about you and your tech support needs. Please be patient with the IET personnel as they take the details. The additional information will allow us to manage resources better. --Roger Terry rterry@oznet.ksu.edu

"Tallgrass Legacy Alliance" by Jim Minnerath, will be presented on Wednesday, November 15, 7:30 p.m., 1014 Throckmorton Hall, KSU, NE corner of Claflin/Denison.

This is a producer-driven initiative, working on methods to promote both financial and environmentally sustainable ranching. A very diverse group of agencies, organizations and individuals working together for the common good of the Kansas Tallgrass Prairie.

Jim Minnerath attended Emporia State University in the early 1970s and has work experience in several states, including Alaska, Wyoming, and Washington. He is now approaching 14 years with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Kansas. --Judy Roe jroe@ksu.edu

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL EXTENSION STAFF
"
Anticipate Excellence - Pathways to Success," is the title of the Epsilon Sigma Phi National Conference Downlink professional development opportunity. This satellite conference will be held on Thursday, November 30 from 11 to 1. Downlink sites in Kansas include the NE Area Office - Manhattan, Finney County Extension Office - Garden City, and Sedgwick County Extension Office - Wichita. If anyone else is interested in hosting the downlink, please contact Susie Latta, at the Marshall County Extension Office. We have six additional  spaces for sites, thanks to Dick Wootton and Epsilon Sigma Phi. The purpose of this conference is to increase ones knowledge of "Gold Medal" programming that shows how Cooperative Extension Programs are exemplifying the concepts of the Engaged Institution, thus making our efforts more valued by clientele. A program from here in Kansas will be featured. Since most of us aren't able to join Jim Lindquist in Salt Lake City, go to a site near you in Kansas and be a part of this national conference downlink. For more information about this professional development opportunity, contact Susie Latta at the Marshall County Extension Office.  --Susie Latta Slatta@oznet.ksu.edu
