RURAL POLICY SYMPOSIUM 2000:
"WHAT'S THE MATTER WITH KANSAS?" The 2000 Symposium has been selected by Kansas, Inc. as one of the venues in which citizens of Kansas will provide input for the update to the Comprehensive Strategic Plan for the State of Kansas. The Symposium will pose questions of issue identification (What’s the matter?) and strategy development (What can be done?). The update of the statewide plan will define specific strategies by which Kansas will continue to achieve economic competitiveness in the 21st century. The symposium will also be videoconferenced to the Huck Boyd Community Center in Phillipsburg, so western Kansas residents will be able to participate there rather than traveling to Manhattan, if they choose. More information, including a registration form and an agenda, are available at http://www.ksu.edu/kcri/events.htm . -- Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@oznet.ksu.edu and Ron Wilson rwilson@oznet.ksu.edu

PUBLICATIONS/PRODUCTION SERVICES
UPDATE "Insects in Kansas," published by the Kansas Department of Agriculture in collaboration with K-State Research and Extension, is scheduled to be available December 1. The 21st century update of the original version, published in 1943 and first revised in 1962, is a 520-page field guide with more than 900 color photographs to help readers identify insect species common in the central states. It includes tips on using the book and on assembling an insect collection, and identifies insects by common and scientific names. Revision authors are Stephan C. White and Glenn A. Salsbury, both entomologists with the Kansas Department of Agriculture. Price for internal customers (defined as those eligible to pay with an interdepartmental or interagency voucher -- including county/area offices, research centers and other state agencies) is $18.66 per copy. Price for external customers is $25. Customers will be billed for all orders, with shipping and tax added, as applicable. K-State Research and Extension units, as well as the Kansas Department of Agriculture, will receive publication announcements in mid-November. The announcements, which are intended to be distributed to external customers, will direct them to contact the Distribution Center to place orders. Internal customers may contact the Distribution Center by mail (Kansas State University, Distribution Center, 24 Umberger Hall, Manhattan, KS 66506-3402), phone (785-532-5830), fax (785-532-7938), or e-mail orderpub@lists.oznet.ksu.edu . Publication number for ordering "Insects in Kansas" is S-131. Internal clients who rarely order and may not be part of the Distribution client database should identify themselves and their state agencies to assure internal pricing. Due to budget limitations, only 2,600 copies of the book will be available at first printing. Although reprints will be ordered as soon as the need is known, state statutes require a bid procedure to be followed, possibly delaying delivery. Order soon to ensure availability. --Nancy Peavler npeavler@oznet.ksu.edu
