REMINDER...
The deadline for Master Farmer-Master Farm Homemaker nominations is Monday, November 27.  Please have your nominations postmarked no later than this date so they can be included in the judging.

FUNDING AVAILABLE FOR INITIATIVE FOR IFAFS
We want to make you aware that funding will be available for the second year of the Initiative for Future Agriculture and Food Systems (IFAFS). This became official when the President signed the Agricultural Appropriations bill on October 28.

The appropriations process changed the institutional eligibility, restricting grantees to the Land Grant Universities and Colleges (1862,1890, l994) and the Hispanic Serving Institutions. This should increase the chance of being funded.

The new RFP is being developed and plans are for it to be published in the Federal Register by early January. While the basic format for the programs will be similar to last year, there will be some fine tuning and sharper focus in several areas. Start making plans now to develop proposals. Proposals need to be developed specifically for the IFAFS guidelines. Old projects submitted earlier need reworking based on the last round of IFAFS proposals. Also, Extension proposals need to address the research base for outreach programs.

Please visit the IFAFS web site at www.reeusda.gov/ifafs  for additional information. Information will be made available as soon as possible on this listserv. We will make this information available as soon as we get it, but you may want to check this web site periodically. --George Ham gham@oznet.ksu.edu

CAMPUS TELEPHONE SWITCHES BEING UPGRADED SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 25
Campus telephone switch changes will affect dial-up internet access and Frame Relay WAN November 25.

We have been notified that Campus Telecommunications will be upgrading telephone switches Saturday, November 25. The affected hours of service are between 4 a.m. and 9 a.m. Phone service will be down in selected areas on campus during this time. Our Frame Relay WAN connections and the few people who use OzNet access dial-up accounts will be down during this time also.

If you have concerns, call IET at 785-532-6270. --Roger Terry rterry@oznet.ksu.edu

E-MAIL SERVER UPGRADE
An e-mail server upgrade will take place during the regular OzNet maintenance period, 8 p.m., November 28, through 6 a.m., November 29. E-mail and Webmail will not be available during this time. No e-mail will be lost during this upgrade.

Webmail will have a new look and additional features after the upgrade. Some of the added features include improved support for ADA standards, filtering rules, signatures, Oznet address look-ups, and an easier-to-use address book.

If you would like to know more about Webmail, check our "How to" link at http://support.oznet.ksu.edu/emailhelp/v26/  or contact IET at support@oznet.ksu.edu  after the upgrade. --Larry Havenstein lhavenst@oznet.ksu.edu

FINAL CALL FOR INPUT ON 2000 KANSAS STATE FAIR
We would like to invite additional comments about any component of the fair that you or your clientele may have to be forwarded to either Dr. Marc Johnson or me. We wish to insure that everyone has the opportunity to share their thoughts on success and suggested improvements. Whether the issue involves a Fair management issue (i.e. parking, admissions, etc.) or a particular show or division, please feel free to forward thoughts to us by December 15, 2000. --Gary W. Gerhard ggerhard@oznet.ksu.edu

4-H HORSE ACHIEVEMENT LEVEL CLARIFICATION
As the entry time for 2001 4-H Horse Panorama nears, more questions are being raised about the 4- H Horse Achievement Level program and eligibility. This information is taken from the August issue of the Kansas 4-H Journal, Project Selection Guide, page 8. Beginning in calendar year 2001, "Junior age members (10-13) who want to ride at the District and/or State horse shows must have been certified through Level 1 by show entry deadline." (JUNIOR AGE MEMBERS WHO WISH TO PARTICIPATE IN PANORAMA EVENTS DO NOT HAVE TO QUALIFY AT ANY LEVEL IN THE ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM. Junior age members who wish to enter District/State 4-H horse show Halter or Showmanship classes must be certified through the leadership and knowledge sections of Level I by District show entry time, 2001.)

"Senior age members (14-18) who want to participate in Horse Panorama, Judging, and only District and State Showmanship and Halter classes must be certified in knowledge and leadership through Level 2 prior to entry deadline in 2001. Seniors who wish to ride at District and State horse shows must have completed all three sections of Level 2 prior to entry deadline in 2001."

This means that if you have senior 4-H'ers who want to participate in 2001 Panorama, they are eligible if they have completed the leadership and knowledge sections of Levels 1 and 2 by Panorama entry deadline. THEY DO NOT HAVE HAD TO COMPLETE THE RIDING OR SKILL TEST TO ENTER PANORAMA. THEY WILL HAVE HAD TO COMPLETE THE SKILL TESTS IN ADDITION, IF THEY WISH TO RIDE IN 2001 DISTRICT/STATE 4-H HORSE SHOWS. We hope this will help to answer your questions. --Steve Fisher sfisher@oznet.ksu.edu and Ann Domsch adomsch@oznet.ksu.edu
