SOME NEW RESOURCES
AVAILABLE FROM YOUR AREA EXTENSION OFFICES
"Financial Management During Crisis," 24-minute videotape
and brochure, The Nemours Foundation, 2000
Caring for a seriously/chronically
ill child can be overwhelming. The financial impact can be disastrous:
unpaid bills, loss of savings, and damaged credit. In this video, health
care providers, utility companies, creditors, and families with
seriously/chronically ill children discuss how to successfully manage
insurance, work with creditors, establish a workable budget, and find
outside help.
"Managing Debt and Building
Wealth: You Can Do It," 11-minute videotapes (English and
Spanish), pamphlets (English and Spanish), and leader’s guide
(English), American Express, 2000
Credit can be a useful tool (to build
wealth) or a trap (if mismanaged). Through a series of vignettes, this
videotape explores some of the typical problems families can face if
they mismanage credit (such as getting overextended when setting up a
household, becoming responsible for a friend’s payments after
co-signing a loan, and only paying minimum balances). The video “wraps
up” by stressing the following checklist: set specific financial
goals; pay of debts quickly; decide to save after paying off debts; and
get expert help.
"New Choices for Receiving Your
Federal Payments," 7 1/2-minute videotape, US Department of the
Treasury, 2000
A recent law provides Federal payment
recipients with more ways to get those payments. This videotape explains
the three major choices--Direct Deposit, Electronic Transfer Account, or
check (if receiving a payment electronically would cause a
hardship)--for those receiving Social Security, Supplemental Security
Income, or Veteran’s Benefits or those receiving Civil Service Salary
and Retirement, Railroad Retirement, or Military Retirement payments.
This videotape supports the “Helping People in Your Community
Understand Basic Financial Services” guide developed by the Financial
Services Education Coalition (located in each County/District Office).
