JANUARY 19 DEADLINE FOR CAFETERIA BENEFITS PLAN
January 19 is the deadline for County Extension Councils and District Governing Bodies to enroll in the Cafeteria Benefits Plan for Extension Council Employees for 2001. Information regarding this was sent in a letter dated October 6, 2000. Enrollment forms are to be sent to Keating and Associates Inc, 1011 Poyntz, Manhattan KS 66502. --Stacey M. DIRECTORY UPDATES NEEDED
The deadline for changes for the printed 2001 Directory is January 26. We will be sending lists to departments, research centers, and area offices for corrections. If there are any changes in e-mail, area code, address, phone or fax numbers, county or district coordinator, upcoming retirements, job classifications, or other personnel changes for the first quarter of 2001, please notify your department, area office, or research center immediately. --Gloria Schwartz gschwart@oznet.ksu.edu 

 

COMMUNICATIONS WORKSHOP
Because we have only three new agents in the class, we have six spots open in our March 5-8, 2001, New Agent Communications Workshop. We invite you to join us. We can take six more people. The workshop begins at 8 a.m. on Monday, the 5th, and ends around noon on Thursday, the 8th. We ask that if you sign up, you participate in the entire workshop. Some of the topics covered include making effective presentations, searching the web, design tips, radio programming, and writing hints. If you would like to attend the 3 1/2-day workshop, sign up now by contacting Julie Owens at 785-532-5804. There is no registration fee. PHOTO JUDGING RESOURCE AVAILABLE

Able to Serve Grant, Youth Service America
Non-profit organizations or public agencies are able to win a $3,000 grant to fund a project for National Youth Service Day 2001 (April 20-21) and beyond. To apply, describe the service project your organization will lead in your state or territory on National Youth Service Day 2001. For more information, or to apply online, go to www.servenet.org . The application deadline is February 9, 2001.

Real Networks Foundation Grant
The Real Networks Foundation, created by a streaming-media company, is currently considering requests to fund under-served communities get better access to technology and enhance the quality of life in communities where Real Networks employees live and work. Colgate-Palmolive Grants
The Colgate-Palmolive Company is offering cash grants up to $2,000 for the most creative and best-executed service projects put together by local clubs. Dollar General Grants
Under Dollar General's Literacy and Youth Development Initiative, the discount retailer will support mentoring, youth self-esteem, education and youth-literacy programs in 25 Midwest and Southern states where its stores are located. General Motors Scholarships
The Chevrolet division of General motors has teamed up with figure skater Michelle Kwan to present the Chevrolet/Michelle Kwan R.E.W.A.R.D.S. scholarship program, an annual award recognizing outstanding female high school athletes. Donald W. Reynolds Foundation Grants

PUBLICATIONS/PRODUCTION SERVICES UPDATE
New Editor
The Publications Unit welcomes Eric Rodenbaugh, the new editor for research publications. He was previously research associate/medical editor for the Department of Surgery at Conemaugh Health System, Johnstown, PA. He received a BS in journalism and mass communications at K-State, MS in forestry at the University of Missouri at Columbia, and is a Park Doctoral Fellow, School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. The position was previously held by Eileen Schofield, who recently retired from the Department of Communications, but plans to continue working as a free-lance editor.

RESEARCH ASSISTANT (FULL TIME) POSITION AVAILABLE
Job responsibilities will include: Laboratory, greenhouse management and field plot, construction of genetic libraries and analysis of genetically modified plants. In addition, successful candidate will assist other researchers and students with their projects. Successful candidate must hold a Bachelors in Biology or related field. Excellent oral and written communication skills and an ability to work well in a team-based/collaborative research atmosphere are essential. Experience with recombinant DNA is desirable.
