PORK QUALITY
ASSURANCE AND OTHER SWINE MATERIALS
We have received several questions regarding
the status of the Pork Quality Assurance program. IF pigs from the local
show are being sold to a packer that REQUIRES PQA level III, the last
owner of the pigs must be certified at level III of the PQA program.
Many of our counties do not market their pigs directly to a packer that
requires level III certification. We still believe the PQA program is
valuable and a good learning experience for the 4-H members, but it is
not required by all packers.
If you would like materials on PQA, we
have PowerPoint presentations available at K-State that you can receive
by contacting Mike Tokach, Mtokach@ksu.edu
; or Julie Wolf, Jrwolf@oznet.ksu.edu
. The National Pork Producers Council also has youth PQA materials that
can be obtained for free by calling NPPC at 1-800-456-7675.
Another resource that we want to make you
aware of is an excellent 4- H swine project manual from The Ohio State
University. The publication, "134R Swine Resource Handbook for
Market and Breeding Projects," can be purchased for $10 from The
Ohio State University by calling 614-292-1607. Let us know if you have
any questions or need further information. --Mike

SNEAK PREVIEW OF
"LIVING IN THE HEARTLAND"
The Department of Communications would like to invite all Research and
Extension faculty and staff to a "sneak preview" of our
proposed half-hour weekly PBS television program, "Living in the
Heartland." This program has been in the works for over a year and
is designed to provide practical and timely information to improve the
quality of life of Kansas families.
The preview will be on May 4, from 10:30
to 11:30 a.m., in Waters 106. Your comments and feedback on this program
are appreciated. --Bob Furbee bfurbee@oznet.ksu.edu
and Ron Frank rfrank@oznet.ksu.edu
THERE'S STILL
TIME TO LEARN CPR
American Heart Association is encouraging people around the state to
"Be a Hero - Learn CPR. It could be the difference between life and
death." There is still time to pre-register for CPR training
sessions in Hays, Hutchinson, Topeka, Wichita, and Kansas City. The
two-hour sessions teach people to recognize sudden cardiac arrest and to
give mouth-to-mouth breathing and chest compressions to circulate blood
and oxygen to vital organs, buying time until the heart can be
re-started with emergency medical intervention. Call for your class time
in a community near you: 1-888-LEARN-CPR. --Susan George sgeorge@oznet.ksu.edu
NATIONAL
EXTENSION TECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE
The National Extension Technology Conference (NETC) is scheduled for
July 28 - August 1, 2001, in Toronto, Canada. Combined with the
Agricultural Communicators in Education Organization (ACE), this year's
conference is loaded with practical uses for Technology in Extension. We
encourage anyone interested in new ways to deliver information to
attend. Check out the conference web site at www.ifas.ufl.edu/~conferweb/acenetc/
