RESEARCH AND EXTENSION FRIENDS
Words cannot express my family's appreciation for the cards, e-mails, prayers and cash gifts sent while our son, Jack, was hospitalized.

Jack is home now and doing fine. He is gaining weight and sleeps almost all night. While in the hospital, Jack was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis. Many of you know that our daughter, Chloe, has CF as well. While this disease does require special care and treatment on a daily basis, it is something that can be managed and has simply become a part of our daily lives.

Thanks again for your thoughtfulness. --Brian, Jill, Leslie, Chloe & Jack Creager  bcreager@oznet.ksu.edu

THANK YOU
Thank you for the many cards and prayers following the death of my father, Clayton Bailey. It is very comforting to know others care. What a wonderful group of people we work with! It is an honor to be a part of  this "extension family." Thank you for caring. --Martha Murphy mmurphy@oznet.ksu.edu

DRINKING WATER LABORATORIES CERTIFIED
We have again updated the list of laboratories certified for drinking water tests. Because Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) revises their list of certified labs each quarter, we are attempting to keep our Extension Bulletin MF 951 current on the K-State Research and Extension web site.

The list of laboratories in Testing to Help Ensure Safe Drinking Water, Bulletin MF-951, has been revised based on information received from KDHE. You may view the listing in the bulletin at the K-State Research and Extension web site, http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/ . Just enter MF951 in the search box and click [go].

In  working with owners and users of private wells, we are emphasizing that SAFE WATER is supplied by a SAFE WELL. A safe well is one that is located, constructed, maintained, and protected to keep contaminants out of the well. When any of these four critical conditions is missing, there is a strong relationship with well contamination.

If you have questions or comments to help improve private wells so the owners/users can have safe water, please let me know. Look for the next revised list of laboratories in August. --Morgan Powell mpowell@bae.ksu.edu

ENVIRONMENTAL TRAINING INSTITUTE FOR SMALL COMMUNITIES
The National Environmental Training Center for Small Communities, (NETCSC), will sponsor the Second Environmental Training Institute for Small Communities, August 6-10, 2001, in Morgantown, West Virginia. This event is targeted specifically at communities with populations of less than 10,000. The Institute will feature training courses about managing wastewater, drinking water, solid waste services in small communities, facility tours, environmental training exhibits, and presentations about key environmental systems management, training, and technical assistance issues.

Participants will have the opportunity to learn about: how to run community water, wastewater, and solid waste services as a business; improving a system's technical, financial, and managerial capabilities; meeting new regulatory requirements; adapting financial accounting and reporting to meet the Government Accounting Standards Board Statement No. 34 (GASB 34 standards); and preparing capital improvement plans for small community infrastructure.

These training courses are designed for environmental trainers, technical assistance providers, regulatory personnel, and small community local officials and decision makers, and will help attendees increase their understanding of the topics and master effective training strategies.

For additional information, contact Susan Maczko at 800-624-8301, Extension 5529, or e-mail smaczko@wvu.edu .

COPIN COUNTY, USA WORKSHOP
Copin County, USA is a workshop that provides the opportunity for agents and community citizens to practice applying their knowledge, values, and leadership skills to local public policy decisions. This simulation activity offers participants the opportunity to learn and experience how local public policy is determined. More specifically, the workshop addresses the ways decisions are made when there are competing demands on local governments and their resources. This is particularly difficult in times when budgets are tight and various responsibilities are being shifted from the federal government to state and local governments.

Copin County, USA asks the question: How will local communities provide necessary services (such as jobs, transportation, child care, food security, health care, and housing) to families who need support and assistance? We will suggest ways to utilize Copin County with various audiences in your community.

The workshop will be offered on Wednesday morning, August 22, 9 a.m. to noon, in Topeka; and again Tuesday morning, August 28, 9 a.m. to noon, in Colby. This is a rescheduling of the session which was canceled because of icy weather last February.

Registration information will be available soon. If you need more information on the workshop, contact Joyce Jones, jjones@oznet.ksu.edu ; or Katey Walker, kwalker@oznet.ksu.edu . --LaVonne Boetell lboetel@oznet.ksu.edu
