KARNAL BUNT ON WHEAT: RESEARCH & EXTENSION EFFORTS
With the discovery of Karnal bunt (KB) on wheat in the southern Great Plains, K-State has information going out for wheat growers on strategies to keep the disease as isolated as possible. A recent news release indicates the importance of seed testing for KB and strategies for keeping KB out of Kansas wheat fields this fall. The story can be found at http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/news/sty/2001/safeseed.htm . Informing all wheat growers of the importance of using clean seed is paramount to the effort.

Kansas State is also leading an effort to bring together a multi-state rapid response research effort with Oklahoma, Texas, and Nebraska already agreed to participate. A recent message went out through USDA-CSREES seeking other partners to advance the science around Karnal bunt. Bringing all the experience and knowledge among the scientists into a comprehensive research effort will reap benefits to all wheat growers.

For the most up-to-date and comprehensive information surrounding the KB issue, visit the "Wheat Page" at http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/wheatpage/ . --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@oznet.ksu.edu

4-H HORSE STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE CLARIFICATION
4-H horse participants in the 2 or 3 year-old futurity programs need to be aware that they only need to be certified through Level 2 by August 1 (State Fair 4-H Horse show entry deadline), to be eligible to show in those classes. The earlier information when the Standard of Excellence program was developed first indicated certification through Level 3, but that requirement was changed by Mark Arns and the Horse Design Team over a year ago. --Steve Fisher for Ann Domsch sfisher@oznet.ksu.edu adomsch@oznet.ksu.edu

DO YOU USE ANONYMOUS FTP (FILE TRANSFER PROTOCOL)?
If you are transferring large files, or receiving files from individuals outside K-State Research and Extension, you will want to know the following...

Access to OzNet's Anonymous FTP site will require a user ID and password effective immediately. The FTP ID is wildcat and the password is willie. The intent of this change is to circumvent foreign hackers who have made the anonymous ftp site unusable. This "fix" is temporary. A new web based FTP solution will be announced in a few weeks. If you have questions please call IET tech support at 78-532-6270. Roger V. Terry  rterry@oznet.ksu.edu

PHOTO ADVENTURE CAMP COMPLETES SUCCESSFUL SIXTH YEAR
Fifty campers, including two from Iowa and one from Missouri, participated in Photo Adventure Camp at Rock Springs 4-H Center, June 21-24. The camp is a major activity of the Photo Action Team, and Pansy Fryman, PAT adult volunteer member, serves as Camp Director. Teen leaders and other PAT members assist with teaching workshops and camp facilitation.

This is an excellent model demonstrating volunteer development and youth as partners in planning, conducting and evaluating programs. We had 12 returning campers, and the rest were a new crop of budding photographers. It is an excellent educational experience for both adult and teen participants.

Thanks for helping to promote this camp, and to the Photo Action Team for their great work. --Steve Fisher sfisher@oznet.ksu.edu
