KANSAS COMMODITY GRAIN COMMISSIONS CHANGE
With legislative action in 2000, Kansas Commodity Commissions are undergoing some change:

* The 2000 Kansas  Legislature privatized the Grain Commodity Commissions. Among other points in the legislation, the commissions will now have an election process to determine the makeup of the commission with 1/3 of the state up for election each year.

* The first election will take place in the central third of the state. Voters must register no later than December 31 of  2001. Ballots will be mailed out no later than January 15, 2002 and be returned by March 1, 2002.

* Any grower who appropriately registers to vote may do so in an election for commissioners representing that commodity and district where the grower maintains an official residence. Anyone who is a resident of the state of Kansas, has reached the age of 18 before the next election and has been actively engaged in growing corn, grain sorghum, soybeans or wheat within the preceding three years will qualify as a grower.

As I am sure you will be asked about this; you will want your commodity crop growers to know of their  opportunity to vote. More information is available through the web at: http://www.ks-agr.org/commod/index.html  --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@oznet.ksu.edu

STATE WHEAT SHOW - DON'T KEEP IT A SECRET
The State Wheat Show will be held August 8 in Colby, Kansas. Walter Barker sent a letter/fliers on July 3. Please share this information with your 4-H families! A radio spot or quick article to the paper would be appreciated.

Wheat for the mill-bake sample is to be in Manhattan by July 26, and head count for those planning to attend would be appreciated to the NW Area office by July 27. Phone 785-462-6281 or register on the web: www.oznet.ksu.edu/nwao

Anyone with an interest in agriculture or eating - especially those who bake quick or yeast breads - will enjoy the day. Educational tours, cash prizes, a chance to make new friends from across the state. Colby hopes to see your county represented! --Phyllis Kriesel pkriesel@oznet.ksu.edu

"COMMUNITIES IN SCHOOLS OF KANSAS AND K-STATE RESEARCH AND EXTENSION ENTER INTO MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING"
Communities in Schools (CIS) - a national organization whose mission is to champion the connection of needed community resources with schools in order to help young people successfully learn, stay in school and prepare for life - has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with K-State Research and Extension. This partnership with CIS is a result of work related to the OPEN-K State Strengthening project, Connect Kansas, and the Expanded 4-H Youth Development Action Team. The Kansas MOU is tailored after a similar agreement executed this year between the USDA and national CIS.

Keaton Kelsoe, CIS State Director; and Elaine Johannes, Office of Community Health; have been designated the organizational representatives for the partnership that will help introduce CIS to communities and connect Research and Extension programs with CIS operations.

Review and download a copy of the Kansas MOU from the Office of Community Health's website:  www.oznet.ksu.edu/healthyplaces . Log onto the CIS website, www.cisnet.org  to learn more about CIS. For more information contact: Elaine Johannes ejohanne@oznet.ksu.edu --Elaine Johannes

K-STATE RESEARCH AND EXTENSION LAPEL PINS AND MARKETING WEBSITE
Pre-orders are being accepted for K-State Research and Extension lapel pins. The pins are being provided because of the need expressed by faculty members to have an affordable memento to use in our ongoing marketing efforts. They would be ideal gifts for volunteers and leaders, committee members, board members, and other individuals or groups associated with K-State Research and Extension.

If you are interested in the pins, please complete the pre-order form available at http://intranet.oznet.ksu.edu/marketing/orderform.htm . A photo of the pins is available at this URL. The pins are priced at approximately $1.50 each, which includes shipping.

While at the site, check out the revised marketing Website at http://intranet.oznet.ksu.edu/marketing/ . The site has been revised to improve navigation, include additional features, and improve the page’s overall appearance. The revised site includes a discussion board where all K-State Research and Extension faculty and staff can post comments or suggestions regarding the marketing effort. Also proposed for the Website is a yet-to-come listing of available K-State Research and Extension marketing materials. Feedback regarding the revised site is appreciated and additional suggestions are welcome.

Please direct any questions or comments to Linda Sleichter at lsleicht@oznet.ksu.edu . --Linda Sleichter

PUBLICATIONS/PRODUCTION SERVICES UPDATE
Third Quarter Orders
We have had some questions about delivery dates for third quarter items.

It is always our goal to have preordered items shipped by the beginning of the quarter in question -- and this quarter we are closer than ever to the target. However, there have always been straggling publications. Right now, most items have been shipped or are being processed, except envelopes and Research and Extension folders (S98), which are still being reprinted.

Since June 30 is the end of the fiscal year for the state, we are locked out of many of our accounting functions from about midmonth until after July 1. We are unable to enter orders, check inventory in the database, or create invoices. In addition, fiscal year-end is when we do any server or software updates. This year, we did both, and we're still in the process of fine-tuning.

If specific items are needed for upcoming events, please flag those items on your order forms. Then we can alert the editors to any priority printing and mark our calendars to note your need. Please keep in mind that some items -- even reprints -- may take six to eight weeks from print order to completion if the printers are busy. We try to keep those items in stock (full-color, notebooks, other "specialty" items), but large orders can deplete our supplies.

Revisions and Deadfiles
We have recently received updates from authors regarding the status of publications. The following items were listed on the Fourth Quarter Order Form, which was mailed before the changes were received. Please note that these publications will not be sent with fourth quarter orders:

S-81, Enhancing Ag Profitability and Sustainability (under revision).

Publications listed below have been deadfiled:

GT-336, Discover Diversity Teaching Guide
MF-1121, Extension Health Education
MF-2293, Program Updates and Highlights - Food Safety
MF-2223, Biological Fly Control for Kansas
MF-1038, Nematode Management in Kansas: Chemical and Biological Control

Publications are usually revised or deadfiled because they are out of date and may contain information that is no longer accurate. Please check with the subject matter specialist before using a publication listed as deadfiled or under revision. --Nancy Peavler npeavler@oznet.ksu.edu
