INFORMATION ON CURRENT COMPUTER VIRUSES IN THE NEWS
Several major computer viruses and computer worms have been discussed in the news lately. The ones mentioned by the news are fairly aggressive in nature and can do damage in some way.

We will see new types of viruses and worms more frequently. IET is monitoring what is out there and knows how to remove it should you get infected. We don't feel the need to restate the obvious each time a virus or worm is released into the public. IET will issue from time to time reminders to use your antivirus software to prevent infections.

There are several steps you can take as a computer user to prevent being infected by a virus or a worm. The best is to install and use the Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition, which is offered on the Support web site http://support.oznet.ksu.edu/intranet/apps.htm .

Also, in order to prevent the spread of viruses or worms it is best to not use an e-mail program that supports scripting in the e-mail. Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express are e-mail programs that support scripting in  e-mail. IET supports Webmail, Pegasus Mail and Netscape Communicator. Currently these programs do not support e-mail scripting.

When you receive an e-mail with an attachment and it is not from someone you know, don't open the attachment. If it is from a friend, double check that they sent the attachment. By your using Norton Antivirus the attachment will be scanned when you click on it, but it is still safer to not click.

All of us will receive computer viruses or worms. But receiving the package is not the same as being infected. By doing the steps mentioned above you can keep from being infected. If you need help or information about installing Norton Antivirus or a virus, please call Communications, IET at 785-532-6270. --Larry Havenstein lhavenst@oznet.ksu.edu

NORTON ANTIVIRUS CORPORATE EDITION REPLACES F-SECURE
K-State has a new site license for antivirus software that fully covers all faculty, staff and students of K-State and K-State Research & Extension.

Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition 7.5 is the new software. This replaces the F-Secure site license which ran out December 31, 2000. The Norton Antivirus license covers any computer you own or operate, even those at home.

Norton Antivirus will do automatic updates of the program and the antivirus definition files, a feature that F-Secure lacked. This should allow better safety as the antivirus software will stay current.

To retrieve the program, configuration file, and installation documentation, go to: http://support.oznet.ksu.edu/intranet/apps.htm . Please read the "How To Install Norton Antivirus Corporate Ed." documentation before installation as it addresses some very important issues.

If you have any problems or questions please contact Communications, IET Support, at 785-532-6270 or Support@oznet.ksu.edu . --Larry Havenstein lhavenst@oznet.ksu.edu

SERICEA LESPEDEZA SECTION 18 LABEL EXTENDED
Kansas Department of Agriculture has obtained an extension of the Section 18 label for Vista and Remedy on Sericea Lespedeza. The following is a summary of the action:

With EPA approval, the Kansas Department of Agriculture is extending the Section 18 exemption 01-KS-07 for use of fluroxypyr (Vista herbicide) to control sericea lespedeza in rangeland and permanent grass pastures. The KDA has received requests from several key technical resource persons to allow the use of Vista up through the end of next month (8/31/01). The extension is needed to allow more time to treat sericea infestations that could not be addressed earlier. No adverse effects or problems resulting from application of Vista under the Section 18 have been reported thus far.

The Sericea Lespedeza Control web site is available http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/glmp/subgm/Sericea/sericea.htm  and will be updated as needed. --Paul Ohlenbusch pohlenbu@oznet.ksu.edu
