NEW ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR FOR RESEARCH
Dr. George Ham retired August 4 as Associate Director for Research in K-State Research and Extension. Dr. Forrest Chumley has been named to the post; he will arrive on campus October 1. Dr. Chumley is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University and the University of California at Berkeley, with a research specialty in cereal genetics. He has experience in agricultural research universities and comes to us from DuPont, where he is manager of university partnerships. He also has served within DuPont as team leader for a variety of research teams. Dr. Chumley's wife, Dr. Barbara Valent, is a well-known plant pathology researcher at DuPont; she will join our Plant Pathology Department.

We have been discussing for some time that our AES and CES organizations are merged, but our administrative structure remains separated along old institutional lines. This is about to change. We recruited Forrest to lead the more fundamental research activities where research resources can grow through attention to national and international scientific grant sources and industry partnerships. Dick Wootton's position will change through time to include leadership for applied research and extension and research-extension team management to reflect the continuum of applied research and education focused on Kansas. We will be fine-tuning responsibilities for each position when Dr. Chumley arrives. --Marc Johnson mjohnson@oznet.ksu.edu

EXCELLENCE IN EXTENSION SEMINAR AND LUNCHEON - AUGUST 29
"Scholarship in Extension: A Report from the Special Appointed Task Force," will be presented on Wednesday, August 29, beginning at 1:15 p.m. in the Big 12 Room, K-State Union. The focus will be a discussion on defining and recognizing scholarly, creative work in Extension. This Seminar, and luncheon preceding it, are sponsored by the Extension State Leaders.

For further information, and if you are planning to attend, please make your reservation by contacting Susie Farrington, 785-532-5838, sfarring@oznet.ksu.edu , by this Thursday, August 23. --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@oznet.ksu.edu

CENTENNIAL EVENTS AT AG RESEARCH CENTER - HAYS
The Agricultural Research Center-Hays is celebrating the centennial of its establishment. A year of activities will culminate with two events scheduled for September 7 and 8. Both events will take place at the Center's headquarters on the south side of Hays.

Fall Field Day
Friday, September 7, 2001 (9 a.m. - 3 p.m.)
Current research results will be shown along with a look back to highlight major accomplishments in research at the Center during the 20th Century. Lunch will be available for a small charge. Dr. Kurt Feltner will deliver the keynote address. This will be followed by the Hays faculty highlighting the technological advancements in their respective disciplines during the previous 100 years.

Centennial Event
Saturday, September 8, 2001 (2 p.m.- 7 p.m.)
This community celebration with the theme, "Then and Now," will feature a county-fair type atmosphere. There will be various guided and self-guided tours and demonstrations throughout the headquarters area. There will be something of interest for people of all ages. Numerous commodity commissions, grower organizations, government agencies, historical societies, and commercial entities will produce an educational experience that showcases the importance of agriculture & agricultural research to Kansans. There will be old power generated steam tractors contrasting with the equipment of modern technology available to farmers for the 21st Century. Jennings Miniature Models (air-powered farm toys) will also be featured during the afternoon. The keynote address will start at 5 p.m. with a picnic supper to be served at 6 p.m..

For more information, contact the KSU Agricultural Research Center-Hays at 785-625-3425, or our website at: http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/wkarc/ . --Joe Becker jbecker@oznet.ksu.edu

KSU PROF: AN INVALUABLE MID CAREER DEVELOPMENTAL EXPERIENCE
KSU PROF (Professional Renewal of Faculty) Program was established in the Fall 1992, and to date 78 K-State Research and Extension/College of Agriculture faculty members have participated in the program which consists of a 2 1/2 day Faculty Development Institute (Retreat) and a 1-day Professional Growth Action Planning Workshop. The Program is conducted in relaxed environments and designed to help mid career faculty members to self assess, reflect upon, plan, and manage their professional career in the context of their personal, organizational, and/or community life.

During this year’s 2001 KSU PROF Program (Class IX), the Faculty Development Institute will be held October 3-5, in Omaha, Nebraska; and in December, the Professional Growth Action Planning Workshop will be held in Nebraska, also. Financial assistance for faculty to participate in the program (including “developmental assistance growth plan grants”) will be provided by Director Marc Johnson, Associate Director Dick Wootton, and Associate Dean Larry Erpelding.

For more information on KSU PROF, contact your unit administrator (e.g., Department Head, Area Extension Director, Research Center Head) or the program facilitator, Marie Blythe (Coordinator of Planning and Reporting) at 785-532-6775. Participation in KSU PROF is voluntary with completed application forms due by Friday, September 14, 2001 in the Office of Planning and Reporting. --Marie Blythe mblythe@oznet.ksu.edu

SAFE STATE FAIR FOOD EXHIBITS
The extreme heat that plagued most county fairs may still be a problem at State Fair time. Whether hot or cool weather, we still need to remind food exhibitors about selecting and preparing safe food exhibits. It may mean for some a modification of their county qualifying exhibit. Refer exhibitors to the bulletin, 4H 712, "Food Safety Recommendations for Acceptable Fair Exhibits."

One clarification to note: if you have members who intend to bring a German Chocolate cake with the typical cooked egg frosting, IT IS NOT CONSIDERED A NON-PERISHABLE FOOD. This custard-type frosting is not safe to set out without refrigeration according to our Food Science Specialists. I would recommend that the exhibitor use the index card that is suggested to write comments to the judge and explain that they are substituting a different frosting for food safety reasons.  A recommended "hot weather" frosting that will stand up under the heat better can be made from 1/2 cup shortening, one pound powdered sugar, one Tablespoon vanilla, and three tablespoons of cream (water can be substituted.) Blend shortening and powdered sugar. Add vanilla and cream. Mix until smooth. Yield of 2 1/2 cups. Coconut and pecans could be added to give it a German Chocolate taste, or purchased, canned frosting could be used. Uncooked cream cheese frostings or fillings used on carrot cakes are also considered perishable, and will not be accepted. --Steve Fisher sfisher@oznet.ksu.edu

VOLUNTEERS STILL NEEDED FOR OUR BOOTHS AT THE KANSAS STATE FAIR
The College of Agriculture, the College of Human Ecology, and K-State Research and Extension will once again have adjoining booths in the Pride of Kansas Building at the Kansas State Fair. The fair runs from Friday, September 7, through Sunday, September 16, 2001.

We have had good response to our earlier requests but need to fill the rest of the schedule soon before the fair starts. We will need people to work in the three booths on both Fridays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Sunday-Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and the last Sunday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.. Sedgwick County has volunteered to man the K-State Research and Extension booth all day on Tuesday, September 11. How about some other offices taking a day?

We would appreciate faculty and staff from campus, counties, Agronomy Fields, and Research-Extension Centers going to the fair and working for several hours on any one day. Also, we would appreciate agents and/or faculty, who are going to the fair anyway, signing up to work a couple hours in the booth before or after your activities. It is fun sharing information about our colleges and organization.

If you would like to work in one or more of the booths, please contact Janet Wenderott at 785-532-5729 or jwendero@oznet.ksu.edu  by August 31. Please tell her which booth you want to work in and which day and times are best for you. We will be in touch soon afterward with the final schedule plus send tickets, work out transportation, etc.

Thank you for your assistance. See you at the Kansas State Fair. --Jackie McClaskey, Cara Richardson, Steven Graham

KAE4-HA "KATCH" PHRASE
"To the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world." - Unknown

How true this is in our Extension work! This time of year can be especially hectic with County Fairs wrapping up and State Fair just around the corner. Therefore, it is especially important to keep in mind why we do what we do. The reason is people and the personal contacts we have.

Networking with other professionals in the associations can help us keep this in perspective. KAE4-HA is always happy to welcome new members. KAE4-HA is not limited to full-time 4-H Agents/Specialists and offers full, associate and first-time memberships. Visit with a member about the many benefits of belonging to the organization. - Michelle Staudinger mstaudin@oznet.ksu.edu
