AGRONOMY FARM
FIELD DAY IS SEPTEMBER 6
The 2001 Agronomy Farm Field Day is Thursday, September 6, at the
Agronomy Research Center on Kimball Avenue in Manhattan. Field tours
begin at 8:30 a.m. with coffee and donuts available. This year
participants can "design your own tour." They can choose from
more than 20 different tour stops and activities relating to crop
production, cropping systems, alternative crops, and environmental
management. There will be a special seminar/discussion on precision
agriculture. As usual, a browsing area will present research poster,
sponsor displays, and an "Ask the Experts" table. KKSU's
Agriculture Today will broadcast live from the site. Lunch is available
at no charge. --Bill Eberle weberle@oznet.ksu.edu

THE
JEFFERSON AWARDS
Here is a great opportunity to recognize those outstanding 4-H
volunteers in your county. The American Institute for Public Service
(AIPS) partners with 4-H and other local community-based organizations
and approximately 70 media outlets across the country to recognize and
honor exceptional volunteers. Each year these community-based
organizations can recognize up to five of the best volunteers with the
Jefferson Award Certificate of Excellence and lapel pin. The volunteer
organizations then submit the recipients as nominations to their local
Media Sponsor. Each Sponsor encourages their viewers/readers to nominate
someone special who volunteers in the community. The Media Sponsor then
selects five to six people from all the nominations to receive a
Regional Jefferson Award. The AIPS' Board of Selectors chooses one
recipient from each of these cities to attend the National Jefferson
Awards Ceremony in Washington, D.C. The national ceremony held in June
each year celebrates community service as well as highlights four
nationally known public servants. From this national ceremony five
regional recipients are selected to receive the Jacqueline Kennedy
Onassis Award and are highlighted in a national television special
"Change the World," which is aired annually on 130-150
television stations across the country.

community visit www.aips.org or

MORE VOLUNTEERS
STILL NEEDED FOR 4-H DIVISION AT STATE FAIR
Thanks to all of you and your volunteers who have responded to help
with State Fair committees. If you are new to the system and missed
Lindy's invitation, it's still not too late to be involved. Just send
Lindy Lindquist an e-mail and let her know when you are available and
your areas of interest. I notice that the Electric exhibit and Forestry
check-in are especially short of help. I also need at least six more to
assist with the FACS Quiz Bowl on the last Sunday.
Please contact me with names of
volunteers or agents who are willing to assist. Tasks include operating
the buzzer, scorekeeping, and runners. Almost all the Check-out
committees are few to none, which means on the last Sunday, if we don't
have committees grouping exhibits by county, that you will be spending
lots of time looking for and collecting your county's exhibits. Thanks
in advance. --Steve Fisher sfisher@oznet.ksu.edu

The Kansas Association of Extension 4-H Agent's, KAE4-HA, invites
you to nominate individuals (living or deceased) for the National 4-H

WHAT MAKES ME TICK AND
WHAT TICKS ME OFF
“What Makes Me Tick and What
Ticks Me Off” is the title of this year’s Classified Office
Professional Advisory Committee’s (COPAC) FREE workshop. This
workshop on “True Colors” is for ALL K-State Research and Extension,
College of Agriculture and County Office Professionals.
At the workshop you will be provided with
the tool of “True Colors.” With this tool you can gain insight into
why you do things the way you do and understand why others have a
different way of doing things. “True Colors” is a unique way to
improve the quality of your life at work and at home.
Due to the subject matter, this year’s
workshop is from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. In order for everyone in an office
to have the opportunity to attend the one-day workshop, “True Colors”
will be presented on two days. You may choose either Tuesday, October 2,
OR Wednesday, October 3, 2001. The workshop will be held in Pottorf
Hall, at Cico Park, in Manhattan. We will provide snacks for the two
breaks; however, lunch is on your own. You may bring your own lunch and
eat at the site, or you may eat at a local restaurant or fast-food
place. (A listing of restaurants and their locations will be provided
for your use at the workshop.) Please join your fellow K-State Research
and Extension campus and county co-workers in this enlightening
workshop.
If you wish to register by e-mail, the
following information is needed: Name, e-mail address,
Department/Unit/County Extension Office, City, and which workshop date
attending. Send this information to Jan Taggart at jbt@wheat.ksu.edu
. Registration deadline is September 21, 2001. (If possible, please
register early so that we know approximately how many “True Colors”
booklets to order.) If you have questions, call 785-532-1945. --COPAC

I DARE YOU AWARD
Many counties are familiar with, and have the tradition of
recognizing outstanding 4-H members with this award. This program is
handled totally by the American Youth Foundation, and not by our office.
I contacted the American Youth Foundation office, and was told the 4-H
mailing is to go out this week. If you need more information, contact
Jackie Fuller, I Dare You Coordinator, at 314-646-6155; or by e-mail at jackie.fuller@ayf.com

PRUDENTIAL
SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AWARDS
Watch for the nomination packet for Prudential Spirit of Community
Awards to arrive in your office in the next few weeks. Middle and High
school age youth are recognized for exemplary acts of service to their
communities. Schools, Girl Scout Councils and local extension offices
can all nominate. One middle school and one high school winner is
selected per state, and receives a $1,000, silver medallion and
all-expense paid trip to Washington D.C., in May 2002.
Kansas 4-H has one of the state winners
since 4-H has been participating. I know you have a member in your
county who is deserving of a nomination. Additional information
for promotion, and application can be found on their website at www.prudential.com/community/spirit
. Applications must be completed by October 31, 2001. --Steve Fisher sfisher@oznet.ksu.edu
