POLICY GUIDELINES REGARDING COUNTY STAFFING
A revised copy of Policy Guidelines Regarding County Staffing, dated 8-15-01, was sent to everyone on The Tuesday Letter list on Thursday, August 30, 2001.  It was an attachment to a package of material sent out as Current Issues by Sue Robinson. Each county office should print and file a copy of this policy paper for future reference. --Dick Wootton rwootton@oznet.ksu.edu

WATCH YOUR MAIL
October 1 will begin Open Season for State of Kansas Health Insurance enrollment and Flexible Spending Account (KanElect) enrollment. Again this year, this will be an online process requiring the use of a password. Everyone will receive their password at their home address. Be watching for an envelope that will come sometime during September and will have a "State of Kansas - Topeka" return address. --Stacey M. Warner  swarner@oznet.ksu.edu

(JUST A REMINDER!)
CENTENNIAL EVENTS AT AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH CENTER - HAYS
The Agricultural Research Center-Hays is celebrating the centennial of its establishment. A year of activities will culminate with two events scheduled for September 7 and 8. Both events will take place at the Center's headquarters on the south side of Hays.

Fall Field Day
Friday, September 7, 2001 (9 a.m. - 3 p.m.)
Current research results will be shown along with a look back to highlight major accomplishments in research at the Center during the 20th century. Lunch will be available for a small charge. Dr. Kurt Feltner will deliver the keynote address. This will be followed by the Hays faculty highlighting the technological advancements in their respective disciplines during the previous 100 years.

Centennial Event
Saturday, September 8, 2001 (2 p.m. - 7 p.m.)
This community celebration with the theme "Then and Now" will feature a county-fair type atmosphere. There will be various guided and self-guided tours and demonstrations throughout the headquarters area. There will be something of interest for people of all ages. Numerous commodity commissions, grower organizations, government agencies, historical societies, and commercial entities will produce an educational experience that showcases the importance of agriculture and agricultural research to Kansans. There will be old power generated steam tractors contrasting with the equipment of modern technology available to farmers for the 21st century. Jennings Miniature Models (air-powered farm toys) will also be featured during the afternoon. The US Postal Service will be on hand to cancel Centennial Postcards with a commemorative cancellation seal. There will be Ag Research Center coloring books and a sand box for the kids. The keynote address will start at 5 p.m. with a picnic supper to be served at 6 p.m.

For more information, contact the KSU Agricultural Research Center-Hays at 785-625-3425 and ask for Pat Coyne; or check our website at: http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/wkarc/

STATE FAIR FOOD EXHIBITS
We've noticed as entry cards have been printed that some counties have exceeded the maximum number of entries allowed in some Divisions. This is to alert you that in the Foods and Nutrition Division, a 4-H'er may only BRING ONE NON-PERISHABLE exhibit (a gift basket counts as a non-perishable exhibit), and one FOODS EDUCATIONAL EXHIBIT. In Food Preservation, a 4-H'er may bring a MAXIMUM OF TWO exhibits, but only one entry per class. Since purchased labels from the 4-H Source book do not ask for all the information which we require, we suggest that labels be made from mailing labels following the format listed on page 96 of the 2001 Youth premium book. --Steve Fisher sfisher@oznet.ksu.edu

Hardships in America: The Real Story of Working Families
This 115-page report, released by Economic Policy Institute (EPI), "is the most comprehensive study of family hardships ever published." The report examines the plight of the working poor by determining basic family budgets for communities across the nation and comparing these figures to wage statistics. The report concludes that two-and-a-half times more families fall beneath the basic family budget levels for their communities than fall below the federal poverty line. The Family Budgets Calculator is an online supplement to the report that generates basic budgets for different kinds of families for 400,000 communities - http://www.epinet.org/books/hardships.pdf ; Family Budgets Calculator - http://www.epinet.org/datazone/fambud/budget.html ; Panel Discussion [RealPlayer] - http://www.epinet.org/real_media/010724/index.html ; Press Release - http://www.epinet.org/press%20releases/hardships.html .
