COUNTIES NEEDED
TO PARTICIPATE IN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY
Recently Paul Estabrooks and Office of Community Health received an AES
grant for 4-H Youth Development. Currently the Office of Community Health
is recruiting sites to participate in an experimental study. The purpose
of the project is to provide training opportunities to 4-H youth leaders.
The project will train community leaders to match resources with
scientific strategies to change their social and physical environment to
ensure positive youth development. These opportunities will improve the
development of 4-H programs where youth can spend after-school hours. For
those counties interested, please contact Raheem Paxton at rpaxton@oznet.ksu.edu
or 785-532-1906. --Raheem Paxton

NEW K-STATE RESEARCH AND EXTENSION
VIDEO
All offices should have received a new video entitled, "K-State
Research & Extension: An Overview." The video was distributed
to most of the county and area offices during 4-H Discovery Days, early
June 2001. All other offices (on- and off-campus) had their videos
mailed in early June. The video is in a white video box with the
four Core Mission Theme logos in a circle on the front.
Please find your office video and have
the entire staff watch it. There are two versions. The first is a
20-minute version that contains some old historical shots of research
and extension activities, plus the recent story of the merger. There are
examples of today's activities in each of our four Core Mission Themes.
The second version is a 13-minute video that is the same as the longer
one but without the historical footage.
Some suggested uses for the video include
sharing it with new faculty and staff members as they come on board in
the future; showing the video to county commissioners, local
legislators, Extension boards, Extension PDCs, annual county Extension
public meetings, research advisory groups, 4-Hers and 4-H leaders; and
offering to show the video to local service groups (Kiwanis, Lions,
Rotary, Pilot Club, etc.) I think you will be impressed with the quality
of our new video. --Marc A. Johnson mjohnson@oznet.ksu.edu

"Dispute Resolution in the Workplace" will be held at the

The workshop emphasizes the dispute resolution concepts, skills, and
strategies necessary to resolve complex employee relations disputes and
systems design for implementing dispute resolution programs in
organizations. Complete information about the workshop and registration

ETHANOL VAN POWERS
AGRICULTURE SCHOOL ASSEMBLY
Connecting Kansas Kids, Crops, and Critters will hit the road in
a new ethanol powered van provided by the Kansas Corn Commission. The
school assembly, provided by the Kansas Foundation for Agriculture in
the Classroom, will travel throughout the state in an E-85 minivan
teaching elementary students the importance of agriculture in our
everyday lives. The assembly shares the wonders and excitement with
local youngsters who may have little knowledge of Kansas agriculture.
The van's debut was Friday,
September 7, at the Kansas State Fair Parade in Hutchinson.
The van will make its way to Great Bend on September 21, to share the
assembly with 250 4th graders. During the assembly, students will get to
manipulate Kansas grains while practicing their math and science skills.
After all, KANSAS IS AGRICULTURE and the assembly helps develop
pride in what our state does best!
For more information about
scheduling Connecting Kansas Kids, Crops, and Critters at your
local school or to learn how you can donate to support the assembly,
contact the Kansas Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom at
785-532-7946 or e-mail ksagclassroom@ksu.edu

2001 KANSAS STATE
FAIR: 4-H/FFA BEEF, SHEEP AND SWINE RESULTS
The Kansas State Fair website lists champions and first through third
place in the various classes. On your behalf, we had requested
displaying results to the 10th place. We will make this request
again. They may yet be able to adjust their site this week. Cooperators
and/or local offices should contact the Competitive Events Office at the
Kansas State Fair for results in these divisions. --Gary Gerhard ggerhard@oznet.ksu.edu
PARTICIPANT
AGES FOR 4-H BEEF, SHEEP, SWINE AT KANSAS STATE FAIR
I would like to end rumors of any pending age change for 4-H Beef,
Sheep, and Swine exhibitors at the Kansas State Fair. Although a few very
vocal parents/guardians have approached the Kansas State Fair management
both in 2000 and now again in 2001, the participation age for 4-H
exhibitors in these division will remain the same. State Fair management
was very supportive of our decision to maintain the age at 10 in our
discussions last winter preparing for the 2001 Fair. --Gary Gerhard ggerhard@oznet.ksu.edu
