ANNUAL CONFERENCE
Dear Colleagues:
I encourage everyone to attend Annual Conference. The organizing committee has put together an excellent program of interest to extension, research, and teaching faculty.

The program and registration information are available at: http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/annualconference/

I look forward to seeing you at Annual Conference.

Marc Johnson
Dean and Director

BUILDING HOUSING NE AREA OFFICE TIGHTENS SECURITY
The Building Director of U.S. Grain Marketing Research Center at 1515 College Avenue in Manhattan received word last week that security is being tightened at that location as a precautionary measure. Therefore,  effective immediately, all back and side doors to that building will be locked during office hours. If you will be coming to the NE Area Office to see one of the staff members or coming to the conference room, you will need to use the front door, which is the east entrance facing College Avenue.

Also, when you come in the front door, you will need to stop at the front desk, sign in, and obtain a visitor badge from the front office.

We'll keep you informed of any changes that may affect that office/location. If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know. --Janice Lierz jlierz@oznet.ksu.edu

FAREWELL RECEPTION FOR CAROL FINK IN POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY
We wish Carol Fink the best as she starts a new endeavor. Carol is leaving Pottawatomie County after 20 years of service. She is pursuing her doctorate degree and working half time through the State 4-H and Youth Development Program on developing evaluations for the FNP program.

There will be a reception for Carol on September 24,  7 p.m., in the Sunflower Room, Westmoreland. All are welcome to stop by and wish Carol the best. --Della Sass dsass@oznet.ksu.edu

TRUE COLORS WORKSHOP : OFFICE PROFESSIONALS
“What Makes Me Tick and What Ticks Me Off” is the title of this year’s Classified Office Professional Advisory Committee’s (COPAC) FREE workshop. This workshop on “True Colors” is for ALL K-State Research and Extension, College of Agriculture and County Office Professionals.

At the workshop you will be provided with the tool of “True Colors.” With this tool you can gain insight into why you do things the way you do and understand why others have a different way of doing things. “True Colors” is a unique way to improve the quality of your life at work and at home.

In order for everyone in an office to have the opportunity to attend the one day workshop, “True Colors” will be presented on two days. You may choose either Tuesday, October 2, OR Wednesday, October 3, 2001. The workshop will be held in Pottorf Hall, Cico Park, in Manhattan. You may bring your own lunch and eat at the site, or you may eat at a local restaurant or fast food place. Please join your fellow K-State Research and Extension campus and county co-workers in this enlightening workshop.

If you wish to register by e-mail, the following information is needed: Name, e-mail address, Department/Unit/County Extension Office, City, and which workshop date attending. Send this information to Jan Taggart jbt@wheat.ksu.edu . Registration deadline is September 21, 2001. If you have questions, call 785-532-1945. --COPAC

MIDWEST AG ISSUES THE FOCUS OF CONFERENCE
Poster proposals are being accepted until October 1, 2001 for "The Changing Face of the Rural Midwest: Latino Immigration Challenges for Communities and Institutions." The conference, designed for research, Extension, organizational professionals, and community leaders working with Latino communities, will be held November 7-9 in Lincoln, Nebraska. The registration fee is $100, received by October 22, or $150 after that date.

Highlights include:
* National and internationally recognized speakers
* Session topics on community leadership, education, immigrant rights, etc.
* Midwest presentations of research and program experience
* Poster session
* Study tour of the Omaha Latino Community Centers

All K-State Research and Extension faculty received a Conference brochure in May. You may request additional copies for community leaders and more information from Tonya Mjelde in Ames, Iowa at either 515-294-3803 or tmjelde@iastate.edu , or contact planning committee member, Carol Young.

The Conference is being coordinated by the MidAmerica International Agricultural Consortium, (MIAC), whose member institutions are the state universities of Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, and Nebraska. Learn more about MIAC at: www.miac.org . Kansas Dean and Director Marc Johnson is the current Chair of MIAC. --Carol Young cyoung@oznet.ksu.edu

RECIPE BOOKLET TO BE DISTRIBUTED AT ANNUAL CONFERENCE
As a service to a valuable Extension partner, the annual recipe books published by the Kansas Wheat Commission will be a part of the "pick up" materials on Wednesday afternoon of Annual Conference at CICO Park. Each county will have 100 books to be picked up. If you need more, let Cindy Falk at the Wheat Commission know. --Steve Fisher sfisher@oznet.ksu.edu

PUBLICATIONS/PRODUCTION SERVICES UPDATE
Insects Coming Back
"Insects in Kansas," publication number S-131, is expected to be back in stock by the end of September. Later this month, watch your mail for order forms to give to clients -- individuals, nurseries, schools, pest control firms, and other private enterprises. The forms will direct them to contact the Distribution Center to place orders. Price for external customers is $25, plus shipping and tax, as applicable. Customers will receive invoices with their shipments and should NOT prepay, since shipping costs vary, and some orders may be tax-exempt.

Price for internal customers is $18.66 per copy, plus shipping. Internal customers are defined as those who will pay with an interdepartmental or interagency voucher -- including county/area offices, research centers, and other state agencies.

Orders may be placed at any time with the Distribution Center, 24 Umberger Hall, Manhattan KS 66506-3402; phone 785-532-5830; fax 785-532-7938; or e-mail orderpub@lists.oznet.ksu.edu .

1st Quarter Order Form Notes and Corrections
"Kansas Lawn Weeds," publication number S-56, is under revision and should not have appeared on the 1st Quarter Order Form 2002. Any orders already placed will be canceled. The item will appear on a monthly order form when revision is complete.

In addition, a number of insect management publications appeared on the order form with last year's date. These items are updated annually, so most orders will be filled with the 2002 versions, not the 2001 publication. If you want copies of the 2001 versions, please let us know as soon as possible. The 2002 publications will be available in February. The publications are: MF809 Alfalfa Insect Management, MF810 Insect Management for Field Corn, MF814 Management of Sunflower Insect Pests, MF742 Sorghum Insect Management, MF743 Soybean Insect Management, and MF745 Wheat Insect Management.

4-H Publications
Please note that 4-H474 and 4-H188 have been combined as 4-H474 titled "Treasurer's Record Book." There has been some confusion with the title and number changes that accompanied the combined publication. The number 4-H188 has been deadfiled. If you need copies of "Treasurer's Record Book," please order 4-H474. If your office mistakenly received copies of 4-H188 during the last year, please return them -- along with a copy of your invoice or a notation of the date received -- for an equal number of the current publication. These will be sent at no cost or penalty.

Enrollment cards MG3A and MG3B have been recently reprinted, and all third quarter orders for these items should be shipped and received by September 21. If you have not received your order, please contact the Distribution Center or Nancy Peavler. --Nancy Peavler npeavler@oznet.ksu.edu
