WATER QUALITY IN-SERVICE TRAINING FOR KANSAS COUNTY AGENTS
Please note that the dates for the "Water Quality In-Service Training for Kansas County Agents" have been switched. The Great Bend training date, originally planned for November 6-7, 2001, has been changed to December 5-6, 2001. The date for the Manhattan training has been changed from December 5-6, 2001, to November 6-7, 2001. Further information concerning the training will be sent to extension offices in October. If further information is needed, please contact Dan Devlin, ddevlin@oznet.ksu.edu , at 785-532-0393. --Dan Devlin

REQUEST FOR COPYRIGHT RELEASE FOR NEWSPAPER COLUMNS
Some agents have reported recently that local newspaper publishers have requested that they sign a publication rights release, transferring copyright of agent columns to the newspaper.

It is inappropriate for an agent to sign such a release since the information in the column is provided to the newspaper by agents for the general public's use, thereby fulfilling the mission of the land grant university. The agent is not freelancing or receiving payment from the newspaper in any form for his/her contribution. Rather the agent is creating the column as an employee of the university.

Should there be any questions, feel free to contact Bob Furbee at bfurbee@oznet.ksu.edu . --Bob Furbee

MEXICO STUDY TOUR - FEBRUARY 2-10, 2002
A message has gone out inviting applications from any individuals with extension responsibilities to participate in a study tour to Mexico in early February, 2002. ALL county extension agents are eligible. I understand that the brochures and letter went out through the Friday pack, but not enough copies went for all to see. However, all are eligible. A similar letter and brochure have gone to all department heads inviting faculty to apply. The focus of the tour is to gain a better understanding of the fruit and vegetable commercial industry in Mexico AND to gain some insight into the people, the culture, and the history, thinking of how all of that relates to Kansas and the immigration of Mexicans into this state, and how that might influence future programming in Kansas.

Deadline for application to be considered for this study tour is October 29. We will have funds to take up to eight individuals from K-State Research & Extension. For more information, please visit our website http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/pr_iaptours/Mx/HortMexico.htm . This tour is sponsored through Assistant Dean Bob Hudgens, International Agriculture Programs, and the Mid-America International Agriculture Consortium. For more information, contact Dr. Hudgens or me. --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@oznet.ksu.edu

PUBLICATIONS AND VIDEOS PAGE ON THE WEB
Thanks to months of cataloguing by the staff in the Publications and Television Units, plus input from authors, the online "Publications and Videos" library is now catalogued with Meta Data. This enables both internal and external search engines to accurately find and describe our publications. The K-State Digital Libraries Project will also be able to seamlessly incorporate our publications into the University-wide online catalog they are creating.

We've added a "Yahoo-style" interface, which allows the user to browse through a hierarchy of user-friendly topics. Individual publications may appear in several categories, increasing their "discoverability."

Wherever possible, pages to which others may be linked will remain, but the indices will now be dynamically updated.

Check out the pre-launch version on the current "Publications and Videos" page: http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/library/ . A feedback form is provided, or contact Nancy Peavler npeavler@oznet.ksu.edu  or Susan Bale sbale@oznet.ksu.edu  with suggestions and questions. --Susan Bale

METLIFE FOUNDATION FOR YOUTH COMMUNITY SERVICE GRANTS
Community service project grants of $500 to $1,500 are awarded to youth who take leadership roles and partner with other youth and adults in their communities. Youth must be actively involved in writing proposals and implementing projects. Collaborative efforts reflecting the diversity of the community are encouraged. Grant award funds are not to be used to establish new 4-H Clubs or to fund leadership trainings.
