OZNET HOLIDAY SCHEDULE
A reduced holiday work schedule (December 24, 2001, through January 1, 2002) is in effect for most people on campus. Oznet services, including e-mail and web functions will be available but operating in "unattended" mode during this time. This means that should there be any interruption in service, IET staff may not be readily available.

Please contact IET staff by first calling 785-532-6270. Otherwise, call us in the following order should you need assistance: Larry Havenstein, 785-537-0131; Will Baldwin, 785-537-4346; Roger Terry, 785-537-2245; Richard Wear, 785-456-7192. No one will be available on weekends or December 24, 25, 31, 2001, or January 1, 2002. Technical support staff will not be available from December 22 through January 1. Normal operations will resume January 2, 2002. --Roger Terry rterry@oznet.ksu.edu

STATE OF KANSAS PRESCRIPTION DRUG INFORMATION
The State of Kansas Division of Personnel Services recently mailed prescription drug plan information to employees at their home address.

This mailing contained new identification cards for plan year 2002 and literature about the AdvancePCS prescription drug plan.

Unfortunately, some of the literature is incorrect. Therefore, the Division of Personnel Services will be re-mailing the correct information to employees.

It is not certain if new identification cards will be re-issued along with the correct plan information. Please retain the initial mailing of cards and literature until such time as you receive the correct information.

Questions should be addressed to either R. J. Steelsmith or Joe Younger, Division of Human Resources, at 785-532-6277. --Stacey M. Warner swarner@oznet.ksu.edu

STATE HEALTH INSURANCE OPEN ENROLLMENT CONFIRMATION STATEMENTS
The Division of Personnel Services in Topeka has advised that the 2002 health insurance open enrollment confirmation statements are available at the AKSESS web site. If you want to see how your health insurance and/or KanElect Flexible Spending Accounts are set up for plan year 2002 (starts January 1, 2002), you may do so by going to the AKSESS web site and printing out your confirmation statement. It is located at: http://da.state.ks.us/aksess .

You will need your Employee ID (located on your pay stub) and password (the one you created when you completed the on-line open enrollment). Employees who experience difficulties reviewing their confirmation statement should contact the Help Desk at (785) 368-8000, option 8, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

The first premium for plan year 2002 will be deducted from the January 4, 2002 paycheck.

Questions should be addressed to R. J. Steelsmith, Division of Human Resources, at 785-532-6277. --Stacey M. Warner swarner@oznet.ksu.edu

RECOGNITION FOR FORREST CHUMLEY
K-State Research & Extension is pleased to note that Dr. Forrest Chumley, our new Associate Director for Research, is co-author of a landmark paper in microbial genomics that appeared in the December 14 issue of Science. The paper reports the complete genome sequence of Agrobacterium tumefaciens C58, a bacterium that causes Crown Gall Disease of vines and other crops.

Agrobacterium has the natural ability to transfer DNA into living plant cells. Agrobacterium-mediated DNA transfer has been developed into an important tool for agricultural biotechnology research, resulting in most of the transgenic crops in use today. The paper represents the culmination of a successful collaboration between research groups in the public and private sectors.

The complete genome sequence should enable researchers to improve plant transformation and speed up biotechnology research in crops that have been challenging, such as wheat and soybeans. The paper is appearing jointly with a similar publication from a research team at Monsanto. The overall confidence level and utility of the genome sequence will be improved by having two independent efforts to compare and contrast. --Marc A. Johnson mjohnson@oznet.ksu.edu
