K-STATE CELEBRATES SEASON OF NONVIOLENCE
From January 30, through April 4, 2002, the K-State campus in Manhattan will observe "A Season of Nonviolence," a national 64-day educational, media, and grassroots campaign dedicated to demonstrating that nonviolence is a powerful way to heal, transform, and empower our lives and our communities. Inspired by the 50th and 30th memorial anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., this international event honors their vision for an empowered, nonviolent world. A Season of Nonviolence is centered around the concept of "64 Days, 64 Ways to Practice Nonviolence," a list of personal, interpersonal, and community actions that promote nonviolence.

Several events are planned for the celebration, including a presentation on "Nonviolence in the Community" and a workshop on "Creating a Nonviolent Community," both by Eisha Mason, Executive Director of the Center for the Advancement of Nonviolence. A film series about Nonviolent Movements and their Leaders is also scheduled.

IMPORTANT AGENT'S TRAINING ON 4-H VOLUNTEER INFORMATION PROFILE (VIP)
If you are a new Agent since 1999 or would like a refresher course on implementing the 4-H Volunteer Information Profile (VIP) in your Research & Extension unit, you will want to register for the VIP Training, February 21, 2002, at the Friendship Center in Salina. Registrations are due February 15 to the State 4-H Office. The Program will begin at 9:45 a.m. and end at 3 p.m..

The 4-H VIP is not a voluntary option for county/district units. All registered 4-H volunteers in Kansas must have completed the process beginning October 1, 1999. Mandatory implementation began after a two year phase-in period. Beginning in 2002, 4-H VIP procedures will be verified when Area Directors conduct County/District Checkups.

The Kansas 4-H Volunteer Information Profile helps you identify, select, and place volunteers, especially those who work directly and solely with children, youth and teens. You, your Extension Board, and Kansas State University can assure with greater confidence the safety of our participants and satisfaction of volunteers by placing them in responsibilities that match their interests and talents.

If you have further questions, please call your Area 4-H Youth Development Specialists. Information was sent to all units on January 10, 2002 from Pat A. Fultz, Professor and Extension Specialist, 4-H Youth Development. --Gary W. Gerhard ggerhard@oznet.ksu.edu

KANSAS 4-H SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION DEADLINE CLARIFICATION
The January issue of the Kansas 4-H Journal has recently been received by 4-H families, county offices, and school counselors. This career issue also lists all of the Kansas 4-H Scholarships that are available. It lists two different due dates. ALL 4-H SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS ARE DUE IN THE STATE 4-H OFFICE BY MARCH 1, not February 15. --Steve Fisher  sfisher@oznet.ksu.edu

KANSAS' GARFIELD WEEK
This is it! Check out www.eBay.com  to bid (or check to see the bid) for the signed, limited edition print of Garfield saying the 4-H pledge. The week of January 27 - February 2 is our week. That means the auction price bid this week will be split in half to benefit the National 4-H Council, and Kansas 4-H Youth programs. Prices paid the past couple of weeks have been around $1,200. Let's see if Kansas can top that. Thanks to Jeff Wichman of KKSU and Nancy Peterson, news writer, for Communications support in publicizing this effort. --Steve Fisher sfisher@oznet.ksu.edu

SOS FOR NATIONAL 4-H CONGRESS CHAPERONES
Diane Nielson will be returning this year as the lead chaperone for the Kansas delegation to National 4-H Congress, November 29 - December 3, 2002. We are still needing at least one more female and two males as chaperones. This is a great opportunity to experience Atlanta with a great group of Kansas 4-H'ers, and about 1,200 other outstanding 4-H'ers from across the county. Chaperone expenses are covered. Chaperone spouses are invited to attend at their own expense. Diane Mack wrote a wonderful testimony about her experience as a chaperone in the recent issue of the "Prairie Professional," the KAE4-HA newsletter. Either Diane Mack or Diane Nielson can give you the real scoop if you have questions about the trip. Remember that it does occur over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

Please call or e-mail me if you are interested. --Steve Fisher sfisher@oznet.ksu.edu

CALL FOR STATE KAA AND 4-H SCHOLARSHIP JUDGES
Selection of state project and scholarship winners will be March 11 - 13, in Manhattan. I am still needing agent, volunteer and/or specialist assistance to have the critical mass to complete this important task. If you can devote one-half day blocks of time from the afternoon of March 11, morning or afternoon of the 12th, or morning of the 13th, please let me know ASAP. Thanks for considering this service learning opportunity. --Steve Fisher sfisher@oznet.ksu.edu
