SUBSURFACE DRIP IRRIGATION WORKSHOP AND TRADE SHOW
The Subsurface Drip Irrigation workshop and Trade Show will be at Colby on February 18, Garden City on February 19, and Hugoton on February 20. Participants will learn about economics of conversion, pumping cost savings, and latest products and services available for subsurface drip irrigation systems. RSVP FOR THE HUMAN NUTRITION/CONSUMER SCIENCE AND GRAZING WORKSHOPS DUE
The Kansas Sustainable Agriculture Roundup Professional Development Day is Friday, February 15, in Salina. Two special tracks will address issues of interest to FACS, Human Nutrition, Horticultural and Agricultural professionals.

MIDWEST CONFERENCE ON AGRICULTURAL BIOTERRORISM
A consortium of Kansas organizations, including K-State Research & Extension, will hold a 2-day conference on Ag Bioterrorism March 25-26 in Manhattan. The conference program includes sessions on food and fiber production and vulnerabilities, public health issues, disease prevention strategies in food crops and livestock, first response and containment, and other topics. The audience target includes those leaders and first responders in your community, and anyone concerned with threats and strategies for prevention of Ag Bioterrorism in Kansas.

BASIN ADVISORY COMMITTEES TO MEET
All Basin Advisory Committees meet during the first two weeks of March. The basin advisory committees are the method established in Kansas for the voice of the people to be heard related to water quantity and quality issues throughout the state. Thanks for your help in announcing these meetings to Kansas residents. Water quantity and quality are important to all Kansans. Distribution will provide instructions later as to how to submit your CCS material orders so Kansas can receive the best available pre-print price. 6TH ANNUAL K-STATE LEADERSHIP SEMINAR
Mark your calendars now to attend the 6th Annual K-State Leadership Seminar on March 28, 2002. The theme for this year's event is "Transformational Leadership Through Turbulent Times," featuring a keynote address by Dr. Rick Rigsby, Professor of Speech Communication, Texas A&M University; and Founder &  Minister, Impact Family Ministries.

HANDSPRING FOUNDATION OFFERS FUNDING FOR PROGRAMS SERVING AT-RISK CHILDREN AND YOUTH
The Handspring Foundation currently focuses on supporting nonprofit organizations or international equivalents that help at-risk children and youth. The foundation offers cash grants to qualifying organizations. Preference is given to organizations with a strong underserved outreach component. The foundation is particularly interested in organizations and programs that are directed towards the following: targeting high-risk youth that specifically utilize the arts, technology, and sports; direct services related to children's health, direct services for children who are victims of abuse or neglect, including services to children in foster care; homeless assistance programs for families with children (food, clothing, education, job training). 

Funding is also available for technical assistance/organizational effectiveness grants for organizations that focus on issues directly related to children/youth at risk. Funds may be specifically requested for board or staff retreats, hiring staff or consultants, staff training, or strategic planning. Foundation grants range from $1,000 to $25,000 per grant, with most averaging between $5,000 to $10,000.

KANSAS HEALTH FOUNDATION COMMUNITY RECOGNITION GRANT APPLICATIONS DUE MARCH 15
The Foundation's Recognition Grants Program is a competitive program open to any nonprofit organization doing innovative work to improve Kansans' health. A total of $750,000 is awarded in two cycles each year. Funding is limited to up to $25,000 per year for an organization. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENTS - AGRONOMY
Postdoctoral Research Associate - weed physiology/ecology - Department of Agronomy - Kansas State University - Manhattan, KS 66506-5501

Job Responsibilities: Conduct multi-disciplinary and multi-year research project to study the effect of different weed management practices on the ecosystem. Incumbent will be expected to design and conduct field experiments, sample collection, processing, laboratory analysis, data management, and write publications. 

Qualifications: Ph.D in weed science, crop science, botany or related field is required. Experience in weed biology/ecology, weed/crop or plant interactions, and field plot techniques is needed. The individual will be expected to interact with weed scientists, entomologists, plant pathologists, soil scientists, botanists, and wild life specialists. Good oral and written communication skills.

Full-time Extension Assistant position - Annual appointment renewable for up to 3 years - Department of Agronomy - Kansas State University - Manhattan, Kansas 66506-5501

Salary: $26,000 per year. Benefits include health insurance program.

Job Responsibilities: Assimilate and input information necessary for operation of a basin wide water quality computer model to be used in extension educational programs. Some overnight travel within the state may be required. Communication with other government agencies, such as the Natural Resource Conservation Service, County Conservation Districts, and with other research and extension faculty will be integral to the successful completion of this project.

Training and Experience: Required: B.S. in Agronomy, Soil Science, Biology, Agricultural and Biological Engineering, or related fields. Proficient in Windows based personal computer programs, such as, EXCEL, WordPerfect, MS Access. Good communication skills. Valid Kansas driver’s license.

Preferred: Experience with computer modeling. Familiarity with ArcView 3.0, BASINS, SWAT. Experience in preparing and conducting extension educational materials and programs. Candidates willing to pursue a graduate degree in agronomy as part of this project.
