EMPLOYEE
OF THE YEAR RECOGNITION AND AWARDS NOMINATIONS DUE
A couple weeks ago, I asked our department heads, extension directors,
center directors, etc., to notify all K-State Research and Extension
employees about a new program for Employee of the Year Recognition and
Awards.
We have established four
awards:
1) One Area/County
Extension classified employee or office professional award
2) One classified employee award for Agricultural Research Centers
3) One classified employee award for the College of Agriculture*
4) One unclassified employee award for the College of Agriculture*
* College of
Agriculture/K-State Research and Extension administration included in this
category.
Nominations are due to your
department head, extension, or center director fairly soon. Nominations
may be submitted by anyone in the various offices. We do not want to limit
who nominates -- anyone can nominate anyone, including themselves.
(K-State Research and
Extension classified and unclassified employees in other colleges are
nominated and recognized through those colleges.)
We have a great
organization made up of wonderful, hard working people. Please take the
time to nominate a deserving candidate. If you have questions, contact

2002 EARTH DAY
EXTRAVAGANZA
The Sternberg Museum of Natural History in Hays invites all Kansas 4-H
members to participate in the 2002 Earth Day Extravaganza. They ask that
4-H'ers submit photographs illustrating human impact on nature. These
photographs will be reviewed and twenty will be selected for a
photographic exhibition at the museum scheduled to run from April 20,
through May 12, 2002.
All entries will be judged for concept,
artistic merit, and overall presentation by professional photographer
Robert Lindholm. Mr. Lindholm is a recipient of the Ansel Adams Award from
the Sierra Club and has been designated a "Master Printmaker."
Entries must arrive at the museum no later
than April 12, 2002. Entry forms and criteria are available at www.fhsu.edu/sternberg/4h
or can be obtained from the project coordinator, Patricia Duffey, 3000
Sternberg Drive, Hays, KS 67601-2006, 785-628-5684. --Jill Stafford jstaffor@oznet.ksu.edu
WALK KANSAS
Can you and your co-workers walk 423 miles across Kansas? Walk Kansas
is an 8-week walking program encouraging co-workers, friends, neighbors,
family members, and schoolmates to come together as a team. It begins
March 16, 2002 and continues through May 10, 2002. The ultimate goal is
for health and fitness. You will recruit 5 people plus yourself to make a
6-member team who will collectively walk 423 miles, the distance across
Kansas. It is approximately 30 minutes a day or 1.75 miles for 5 days a
week. Fifteen minutes of most fitness activities will count as one mile in
your team's walk across Kansas.
Most people think they can't find 30
minutes a day to reduce their risk of developing: high blood pressure,
obesity, osteoporosis, diabetes, high cholesterol, heart disease,
etc., etc. I hope you will make time for your health.
If you would like to participate in this
fitness challenge, e-mail LaVonne Boetel, lboetel@oznet.ksu.edu
, and she will send you a team packet with instructions on how to sign up.
There is a $5 registration fee per person or $10 for a family. --Mike

MORE ASSISTANCE FOR
SMALL BUSINESSES AFFECTED BY 9/11
Small businesses which were directly "or indirectly" harmed
by the September 11 terrorist attacks can get a break on loans from the
U.S. Small Business Administration. STAR Loans - Supplementary Terrorist
Activity Relief loans - are available as long as the appropriated funds
last or no later than January 10, 2003.
The Defense Appropriations Act, signed by
President Bush on January 10, 2002, reduces the on-going fee charged to
the lender on new 7(a) loans made to small businesses that were
"adversely affected" by the September 11, 2001, terrorist
attacks and their aftermath. Small businesses can use this feature for any
7(a) program, including regular 7(a), LowDoc, Export Working Capital,
CAPLine, etc.
Please encourage small businesses in your
county, which may have been adversely affected by 9/11, to check out the
possible use of STAR Loans. For more information about the program, they
may look on the web at: www.sba.gov/disaster/
or they may call the Wichita SBA office for more details: 316-269-6571.

SPORT FISHING AND
VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS
These are two new projects that will appear on the 2002-2003 4-H
enrollment card. This means that local Extension offices need to consider
these projects during the current 4HCCS pre-press order period.
The Sport Fishing Action Team has endorsed
the CCS materials and will begin to include them in their project leader
training. If you expect enrollment in this project next fall, now is the
time to consider your material needs on the current CCS order form.
The FACS Action Team has recommended
changing the Arts and Crafts project to "Visual and Performing
Arts." Project materials will be the current CCS "Palette of
Fun" for visual arts and crafts and the CCS "Theatre Arts"
for the performing arts portion. Thus, you will want to estimate your
needs for these areas also as you complete your CCS order form.
Remember that both action teams have spring
and summer training sessions scheduled that are bound to increase
awareness and interest in these project offerings. --Jim Adams jadams@oznet.ksu.edu
KAE4-HA KATCH
PHRASE
In Shakespeare's time, mattresses were secured on bed frames by ropes.
When you pulled on the ropes, the mattress tightened, making the bed
firmer to sleep on. Hence the phrase, "goodnight, sleep tight."
If you feel like your extension ropes have lost their tightness, come and
visit KAE4-HA. We are meeting on Thursday, March 7, 8-10 a.m. at the
Sedgwick County Extension office. Don't lose any more sleep, come and
collect ideas for your 4-H program! --Andrea Schmidt aschmidt@oznet.ksu.edu

2002 Order Form, scheduled to be shipped March 8. Remember that many 4-H
items are listed during the 3rd Quarter, so order now to prepare for next
fall's enrollment. Orders for items listed on both forms will be due April
