IMAGINE WHAT'S POSSIBLE...
... when you and your colleagues partner with K-State Research and Extension, the Division of Continuing Education, and various community organizations to create new learning environments for Kansans.

Purdue University and its partners created these opportunities for the citizens of Indiana: enhance their community's viability by improving workforce skills, complete a degree to build career around, increase involvement in life-long learning, and much more.

Interested in becoming a partner? Here's your chance to discuss the possibilities. Attend a videoconference hosted by Purdue that will feature presentations from three states that have already developed learning centers. Then discuss and form questions regarding the learning center/network concept.

Set aside noon till 3 on March 25, in Waters Hall 137

The agenda is forthcoming. Questions? Contact Kathy Wright: 785-532-1100, or kwright@oznet.ksu.edu , or visit the Web site at http://www.ces.purdue.edu/LearningNetworks/ . --Kathy Wright

K-STATE LEADERSHIP SEMINAR
In times of uncertainty and change, do you look to others for support, insight, and inspiration; or do others look to you? Join us for "Transformational Leadership Through Turbulent Times," the 6th Annual K-State Leadership Seminar on Thursday, March 28, 2002, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the K-State Union Little Theatre on the Manhattan campus.

The seminar will explore what it means to be a transformational leader in today’s world. Keynote speaker Rick Rigsby will help you go beyond simply making an impression by explaining what it really means to make an impact on those around you. The seminar will also explore tools that you can use to better understand the power of change and how we can work together toward a shared vision of the future.

The registration fee is $20 and includes morning refreshments, lunch, and seminar materials. To request a seminar brochure and registration form, contact the PRIDE Program office at 785-532-5840. The deadline for registrations is March 25. --Robert Wilson rwilson@loki.agecon.ksu.edu

NEW MAJOR SCAM: DON'T EVER DIAL AREA CODE "809"
Don't ever respond to e-mails, phone calls, or web pages which tell you to call an "809" area code. These calls go outside the U.S. and the foreign phone companies where you call can legally charge you $2400 or more for brief phone calls. Trying to fight the charges can become a real nightmare. That's because you actually did make the call. If you complain, both your local phone company and your long distance carrier will not want to get involved. They will most likely tell you they are simply providing the billing for the foreign company.

It's not always easy to tell if you're dialing an international telephone number. In most cases, you have to dial "011" to begin a call to a foreign country. But there are locations outside the U.S. whose telephone numbers may look like domestic long-distance calls, but they are actually international calls and international rates apply. For example, 809, 284 and 876 are area codes in the Caribbean.

There are many scams that deceive consumers into calling international numbers. You may see an ad for a service that directs you to call a specific number, or you may receive a page, an e-mail message or an "urgent" message about a family member, etc. on your answering machine. All messages direct you to call a number for more information - almost always an international number.

Defense: Be cautious about area codes you don't recognize. Check your telephone directory or call the operator to determine where the area code is before making your call.

Control access to your telephone so unauthorized callers do not use your phone to call these services. A block on calls to "900" services will not stop calls to "011" or "809" numbers. If you're sure you won't need to make international calls, call your long-distance carrier and ask them to put an international block on your telephone line.

Additional information can be obtained from the following AT&T Web site: http://www.att.com/fraud/home.html#three . Beware and be careful. --Steven Graham sgraham@oznet.ksu.edu
