The internal price is $5.00 per disc. If you would like a disc, and have not ordered yet, please order soon so we can make enough copies. --Amy Hartman ahartman@oznet.ksu.edu

SHARING OF MAILING INFORMATION OF 4-H MEMBERS/LEADERS/PARTICIPANTS
Recently, an Extension Agent was approached by a second party for a mailing list of all their members enrolled in a particular project. This second party was not a member of the Extension organization nor was it an authorized 4-H affiliate that abide by strict limitations and confidentiality of this information (i.e. Kansas 4-H Foundation; National 4-H Council/Conference Center/Supply Service; KS Association of 4-H Volunteers; etc.)

This is a reminder that USDA as well as K-State Research and Extension policies do not allow the distribution of mailing lists to second parties without specific authorization.

If inquiries of this type are made, invite the party to provide sufficient copies to you for your needs and distribute them, if appropriate for your audiences, to Extension cooperators through your means such as club mailboxes or at county-wide meetings. --Gary W. Gerhard ggerhard@oznet.ksu.edu

NEW PUBLICATION ON PREVENTING SPILLS AND RELEASES OF CONTAMINANTS
During the spring of 2001 Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) reported an increase in spills reported that were from agricultural sources. This increase in spills included fertilizer, pesticides, fuel, and waste materials. Equipment limitations, inadequate training, weather conditions, and time pressures are believed to be contributing factors to this increase in spill rate. Most spills can be prevented through training, planning, and attention to detail.

The Extension bulletin "Prevent Spills and Releases of Contaminants," MF- 2549, has been developed to help people understand spills, how to prevent spills and releases, and what action needs to be taken when a spill occurs. This new bulletin is now on the website and can be printed, http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/library/h20ql2/mf2549.pdf . I encourage agents and others to publicize this new bulletin. It will appear on the Department of Communications - May order form as a new bulletin for August delivery.

State law and regulations require that fuel spills and unauthorized discharge of pollutants shall be reported to KDHE, Bureau of Environmental Remediation. Unauthorized pollutants include everything that the owner does not have a permit to discharge. --Morgan Powell mpowell@bae.ksu.edu

ANDREA SCHMIDT NAMED 2002 "FRIEND OF COLLEGIATE 4-H"
Riley County 4-H Youth Development Agent Andrea Schmidt was named the 2002 K-State Collegiate 4-H Club's "Friend of Collegiate 4-H." For the past two years, Schmidt has supported the club and it's members by mentoring students interested in Extension careers, training club members who serve as 4-H Day Judges and aiding members in locating projects for community service hours. She was recognized at the K-State Collegiate 4-H Club Banquet on May 3. --Lindy Lindquist llindqui@oznet.ksu.edu

CRAWFORD COUNTY EFNEP OFFICE HAS MOVED
The Crawford County EFNEP Office has moved to 667 S. 69 Hwy, Pittsburg, KS 66762. Our telephone and e-mail remain the same. Stop by and visit our much improved office space. --Martha Murphy mmurphy@oznet.ksu.edu

NEW EXTENSION PUBLICATION
The new Extension publication, “Selecting an Onsite Wastewater or Septic System,” MF-2542, describes the range of wastewater treatment systems available to homeowners. The site conditions determine whether a conventional septic system, a lagoon, or a more complex advanced treatment system will function well at a particular home. Advice on making an informed consumer decision and protecting the system for long-term performance is included. --Barbara Dallemand bdallem@bae.ksu.edu , Morgan Powell mpowell@bae.ksu.edu

CROP DIAGNOSTIC SCHOOL JULY 10-12, 2002
The Crop Diagnostic School will be held July 10-12, 2002 (Wednesday-Friday) at the Agronomy Farm in Manhattan. The school is an excellent opportunity for agents interested in or working with crop production to update and/or improve their knowledge and skills with crop production.

If an agent with less than 5 years of service wants to go and expenses are a concern, we will take applications for the Verlin H. Peterson Extension Agronomy Professional Grant through May 10. The deadline was May 3, but since the dates for this opportunity had not been set, the deadline has been extended.

For more information on the Crop Diagnostic School or to register, contact Dale Leikam at 785-532-5776 or email dleikam@ksu.edu . --Paul D. Ohlenbusch pohlenbu@oznet.ksu.edu
