DORIS WELCH RECOGNIZED IN NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC
Congratulations to Doris Welch, Kearny County FACS agent, for her recognition in this month's issue of National Geographic regarding programming in food safety education.

The 30-page story features many different facets of food safety, followed by a 20-page story on biotechnology and genetically modified foods. The double spread photo layout shows Doris and two additional sets of hands belonging to Linda Walter, Finney County FACS agent; and Belinda Oldham, Wichita County FACS agent; using glow powder to demonstrate how bacteria is affected by proper hand washing. In the article, Doris commented the "Glow Germs" program activity is demonstrated in Servsafe classes as well as school and 4-H youth development programs. This Extension food safety program will get world-wide exposure in this monthly magazine which reaches approximately 35 million subscribers. --Paul Hartman phartman@oznet.ksu.edu

3RD ANNUAL KANSAS YOUTH LEADERSHIP FORUM
Planning is underway for the 3nd Annual Kansas Youth Leadership Forum, to be held November 22-24, 2002 at Rock Springs 4-H Center. The theme for this conference is "Leadership-A Knowledge Within You."

This event, designed for youth ages 14-18, will include: speakers, track sessions, service learning, consulting groups and the election of our third State 4-H Council.

We are recruiting proposals for track session presenters and consulting group facilitators. The Kansas 4-H Youth Council hopes you will be interested in sharing your expertise and talents with one or more of these opportunities.

Track Sessions (Workshops) will be offered on Saturday, November 23, 8:30- 9:30 a.m. (session #1); 9:45-10:45 a.m. (session #2); 3:15-4:15 p.m. (session #3). Topics should center around leadership. Some ideas might include citizenship, communication, conflict management, ethics, motivation, initiatives, decision making, leading by example, time management, using your resources, leadership after high school, getting involved, international citizenship, diversity and multi-cultural studies. You might also consider offering a class for more than one session.

Consulting Groups will be offered on Saturday, November 23, 11:00-12:00 noon. The purpose of the Consulting Groups is to get youth opinions, ideas and solutions for the participants to take back to their own communities. This information will also be used for state programming and for National Conference Delegates to take to Washington, D.C. Some topic areas might include: technology, continuing 4-H involvement, expanding 4-H involvement, power of youth, healthier and safer youth, ethical solutions, diversity, maintaining interest and motivation.

For the letter and presenter form please contact Beth at the SC Area Office, bhinshaw@oznet.ksu.edu . We need presenter forms back by June 10.

The State 4-H Youth Council will be reviewing proposals in early June. Selected presenters will be notified in July. --Beth Hinshaw bhinshaw@oznet.ksu.edu; and Lindy Lindquist llindqui@oznet.ksu.edu

FORT RILEY OPEN HOUSE JUNE 1
I am pleased to invite you to the Fort Riley Open House from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on June 1, 2002. The Open House will demonstrate to the public what the soldiers of the United States Army and Fort Riley do for the nation and its citizens. Our main attractions will be centered in the historic district of Main Post and will include an Expo Center, Historical tours, Night Vision Demonstration, Laser Assault Course, Carnival Rides, and Concessions.

In addition, the public will be allowed to visit the Close Combat Tactical Trainer (CCTT), where they will experience the simulations of a M1 Abrams Main Battle Tank and a M2 Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicle. They will learn about the weapon systems of these vehicles and engage in simulated battle scenarios at the National Training Center, Fort Irwin, California, via virtual reality.

Our goal is to host over 30,000 visitors, and with your support we could exceed this goal. Please help us get our open invitation out to the public so that as many citizens as possible can enjoy our celebration of the United States Army and Fort Riley. I hope that you will be among the thousands of citizens who join us on Saturday, June 1. --Thomas F. Metz, Major General, U.S. Army, Commanding General
