FAREWELL AND WELCOME
Dr. Richard Wootton’s last day as our Associate Director of Extension occurred late last week. He should now be on his way to Washington, D.C., where he will be serving as the Director of Extension and Outreach for the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges. I have benefited from the orientation and mentoring that Dick was able to provide me during the last few weeks before he retired from K-State and know that I still have much to learn. I am looking forward to working with you during the next thirteen months until the new Associate Director for Extension and Applied Research is identified and assumes the leadership position. Let me know if you have suggestions or recommendations for helping us complete our mission as the best organization of this type in the Nation. –Randy Higgins rhiggins@oznet.ksu.edu

EMPORIA 4-H FACS PROJECT LEADER WORKSHOP CANCELLED
Due to low registration, the project leader training for 4-H adult and teen leaders in Foods and Nutrition, Clothing and Textiles, Arts and Crafts and Home Environment, scheduled for Emporia on June 1, had to be cancelled.

The 4-H FACS Action Team is meeting at McPherson on June 1 to re-evaluate our strategy for marketing, and plan to make an all-out effort to make the August 17 workshop scheduled for McPherson the best and most appealing that we can. I can assure you that the action team members have planned a fun, hands-on, practical training, and participants will leave with free goodies and take-homes that they can put to immediate use.

I'll be informing all counties of our plans after we meet, and continue to ask for your assistance in promotion and encouraging your leaders to attend. --Steve Fisher sfisher@oznet.ksu.edu

PRESIDENTIAL FREEDOM SCHOLARSHIPS REWARD SERVICE, CITIZENSHIP BY STUDENTS
A scholarship program to recognize high school students who have demonstrated exemplary service to their communities has been given a new name and a new, post-September 11 focus, the Corporation for National and Community Service recently announced.

Presidential Freedom Scholarships of $1,000 will be awarded to juniors and seniors who are recognized by school officials for their exceptional commitment to responsible citizenship through service to their communities. To qualify for the scholarship, students must have served at least 100 hours over the past 12 months and must also submit a brief essay on the meaning and significance of their service in light of the events of September 11, 2001. The new scholarship program updates the President’s Student Service Scholarships, which have been awarded to more than 20,000 students since 1997. The program continues to be administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service through its Learn and Serve America program. The Corporation, a federal agency, engages more than 2 million Americans of all ages and backgrounds in service to their country and their fellow citizens.

For more information or to download a nomination form, visit: www.nationalservice.org/scholarships . Thanks to Clover Corner News for supplying this information. I know we have deserving Kansas 4-H'ers who meet this criteria. --Steve Fisher sfisher@oznet.ksu.edu
