JULY 2 MEMO FROM MARC JOHNSON, DEAN AND DIRECTOR
We are implementing strategies to respond to a major budget shortfall. Following are some of the actions being taken:

- In the College of Agriculture we are closing six faculty positions to address a half million dollar shortfall.

- In K-State Research and Extension we are:
a.) closing 21 faculty positions (14 now and 7 as soon as they are vacant)
b.) closing 13 classified positions
c.) requesting USDA approval for 30 early retirement positions within Extension
d.) reducing operating expenses by $1.6 million
e.) collecting the county share of county extension agent employee benefit costs from county councils
f.) reducing area extension specialist support from five offices to four; the South Central Area Extension Office will downsize significantly.

Units will be determining in the next couple of months how to operate with less resources. There will be numerous challenges responding to these changes. We will operate differently, but we still have much to do to fulfill our missions. In the future as our block grant from the state is increased, we will place first emphasis on salaries and operating support for those who continue working.

We will be starting our five-year planning procedure for 2004-2008. This should be a useful exercise to select priorities which we can accomplish with our new level of resources, plus the fruits of our entrepreneurship.

Best wishes to each of you, individually, as you adjust to these changes. --Marc Johnson mjohnson@oznet.ksu.edu

KANSAS STATE FAIR INFORMATION ON 4-H WEBSITE
Kansas State Fair information that was previously mailed to local Extension offices as a large packet, will not be mailed this year. The information is on the Kansas 4-H website! Go to the Kansas 4-H homepage at http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/dp_4hyp/  and click on the hyperlink that will bring up the "packet" information. You may print the contents of the entire packet or only those pages that you need.

Because of their nature, the NCR forms used for judging contest entry and tabulation will be mailed to your office before the State Fair. We will continue to mail entry cards and demonstration, fashion revue and showcase schedules to you as those are completed. --Lindy Lindquist llindqui@oznet.ksu.edu

FACS QUIZ BOWL DEADLINE
A reminder that counties intending to enter a FACS Quiz Bowl Team at the 2002 Kansas State Fair, need to submit 25 questions from the assigned references by July 25. They can be e-mailed or sent hard copy to Steve Fisher. I sent the information for FACS judging classes and FACS Quiz Bowl references to all county offices in a letter dated May 1. --Steve Fisher sfisher@oznet.ksu.edu

THANK YOU
Our family would like to thank you for all of the cards, e-mails, phone calls, visitations, prayers and contributions in the loss of our dad. We now know why all of those years ago our parents made extension and 4-H such an important part of our lives. It makes it easier to know that we have so many friends to support us at this time. In friendship, Sharon Bairow-Riffey and all of the Dale Bairow Family. sriffey@oznet.ksu.edu
