RESEARCH AND EXTENSION CALENDAR STATUS
Declining use of desktop calendars (caused by the popularity of PDAs
(Palm Pilot, Visor Edge, etc.), broad use of other types of multi-ring
binder planners, and the on-line version of Netscape Calendar, coupled
with our current budget limitations, have led us to decide that we will no
longer produce a hard copy version of our KSRE purple-covered desktop
calendar. Hence, you will not receive a 2003 calendar order form this
year. This change will save us several thousand dollars.
As an alternative, Martha Monihen (with
Planning and Reporting) developed a Portable Document Format (PDF) version
of the 2003 calendar that can be printed locally as a replacement for the
desktop calendar. The current format prints one page per month with room
for adding notes on a daily basis in a manner reminiscent of the centrally
printed version.
To view and download this on-line resource,
go to the K-State Research and Extension Planning and Reporting / Resource
Center homepage at http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/prev/
and look for the New 2003 Monthly Calendar link. Another option is to go
directly to http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/prev/2003%20Calendar.pdf
. The cover will print as page 13. The list of important dates will be
distributed later, as more 2003 events are scheduled. We are letting you
know of this decision now so you can view the PDF version and make
alternative arrangements if it is not suitable for your use. Please help
notify staff employing the printed calendar in the past of this change and
how they can access the PDF version. --Randy Higgins rhiggins@oznet.ksu.edu

The August 17 workshop is scheduled in McPherson and the August 24
workshop is scheduled in Scott City. A minimum of 50 participants is
required to hold the workshops. The registration form is on the 4-H

THE USDA'S NORTH CENTRAL REGION SARE
PROGRAM
Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education invites researchers,
scientists, educators and others to learn how to write better SARE
proposals at summer workshops. A workshop on outcome-based planning and
evaluation will be held August 22, from 1 - 4 p.m. in Kansas City.
These workshops will provide SARE grant
proposal authors and others with an introduction to outcome-based planning
and evaluation techniques. Attendance in the past has been highly
correlated with success in the proposal selection process. The workshops
are free to those who pre-register.
The sessions will also provide information
on SARE and an opportunity for proposal authors to discuss projects with
SARE staff and/or Administrative Council members. Workshops will be
particularly helpful for individuals interested in submitting proposals to
the Research and Education program or the Professional Development Program
(PDP), since those two programs emphasize outcomes and evaluation. The
call for Research and Education Preproposals is released in mid-July, and
the call for PDP proposals is released in January.
For more information, contact Jana Beckman,
State SARE PDP Co-coordinator, 785-532-1440. --Jana Beckman jabeckma@oznet.ksu.edu

4-H MODEL ROCKET EXHIBITS: LAUNCH
REQUIREMENT WAIVED FOR 2002 KSF
It has been determined that the requirement that 4-H model rocket
exhibits must have been launched will be waived at the 2002 Kansas State
Fair 4-H Youth Division. This is only for the 2002 Kansas State Fair. Due
to the extreme drought and burning bans in many counties, it would be
impossible for us to fairly evaluate this criteria.
Dr. Walter Barker will inform all judges in
this division of the KSF. Please contact Walter Barker at the Northwest
Area Research & Extension Center if you have any questions. --Gary W.

PUBLICATIONS/PRODUCTION SERVICES UPDATE
Please Check Standing Orders
If your office maintains a standing order for performance test
publications from the Agricultural Experiment Station, please consider
whether your order just meets or whether it exceeds local needs. This
year's results on winter wheat are complete and have entered the
distribution chain. Other publications in the series will follow soon, so
we want to avoid waste and be sure you receive only the number of copies
your office needs.
If you are unsure of your office's standing
order, or if you would like to change your order, please contact Jane
Gibbs, jgibbs@oznet.ksu.edu , or
785-532-1146. The publications will be shipped via UPS this year unless
your office contacts the Distribution Center to let us know you would
prefer to pick up the order.
