2003 WHEAT VARIETY DEMONSTRATION PLOTS
Don't forget to order your wheat demo packets. Each county agent was provided with a form to fill out and return to Jim Shroyer.

Ten pounds of the selected varieties will be sent to you in August, unless you arrange to pick up your packet. If you need more than 10 pounds, please indicate how many sets of a particular variety you will need (e.g. you need 30 lbs of Jagger, indicate 3 sets).

The approximate cost per variety will be $4.50 plus shipping, but the shipping cost can be avoided by picking up at the State Fair.

Because we have changed to this menu system, we will purchase from other states the EXACT amount of seed requested. Therefore, it is important that you RETURN this order form BY AUGUST 9, 2002. There will not be another opportunity to order late. We may not be able to find a supply of all the varieties, but we'll try. If you want private varieties in your demonstrations, you will need to make those arrangements.

Please send your orders to Jim Shroyer at jshroyer@oznet.ksu.edu, or fax to 785-532-6315. --Jim Shroyer

CORRECTION ON KANSAS STATE FAIR PHOTOGRAPHY ID CARD
It has just been brought to our attention that some of the mounting information for the KSF Photography ID  Card in the KSF Packet Letter is missing. That page has now been corrected on the web. We're sorry for any
confusion this may have caused. --Pat Fultz pfultz@oznet.ksu.edu / Steve Fisher sfisher@oznet.ksu.edu

MASTER FOOD VOLUNTEER INSERVICE REGISTRATION
Now is the time to register for the August 28 Master Food Volunteer Inservice. The workshop will be held in Hutchinson from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.. It will provide an introduction to the MFV program and resources, feature the experiences of agents in Kansas's first Master Food Volunteer effort in Wyandotte, Johnson and Miami counties, and provide tools to help manage volunteers. The inservice is for agents who are interested in exploring the use of volunteers to expand the reach of their food and nutrition programs. The MFV program is patterned after the Master Gardener program. For more information, contact: Karen Penner or Gayle Price. Register by contacting Cara Wohler, cwohler@oznet.ksu.edu . --Karen Penner kpenner@oznet.ksu.edu

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO HELP IN OUR BOOTHS AT THE KANSAS STATE FAIR
The College of Agriculture and K-State Research and Extension will once again have booths in the Pride of Kansas building at the Kansas State Fair. The College of Human Ecology will not have a booth this year in our building. The State Fair runs from Friday, September 6, through Sunday, September 15, 2002.

We would appreciate if faculty and staff from campus, counties, Agronomy Fields, and Research-Extension Centers would consider going to the fair and working for several hours on any one day. Also, we would really appreciate agents and/or faculty from campus, who are going to the fair anyway, signing up to work a couple hours in the booth before or after your activities.

We will need people to work on both Fridays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 10 p.m.; Sunday-Thursday from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m.; and the last Sunday from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m.

You will see people from your part of the state, prospective students and their parents, old college friends, and many K-State alumni who come by the booths to visit. It is fun sharing information about the college and K-State Research and Extension with everyone.

If you would like to work in one or more of the booths, please contact Cassie Mitchell at 785-532-5729 or cmitchel@oznet.ksu.edu  by August 23, and let her know which booth, day, and time is best for you. We will be in touch in late August after the start of the fall semester to finalize days, times, entrance tickets, transportation, etc. --Jackie McClaskey jmcclask@oznet.ksu.edu and Steven Graham sgraham@oznet.ksu.edu

"KIDS A COOKIN'"
"Kids a Cookin'," a new weekly kids cooking program produced jointly by the Family Nutrition Program and the Department of Communications, will soon be seen in Southeast Kansas over KOAM-TV in Pittsburg. The Communications Department and FNP have been working over a year in developing the weekly 4 minute programs that are designed to teach basic cooking skills, food safety and healthy food choices to kids and their parents. Sandy Procter and Kathy Walsten are providing the content and the Department of Communications, along with the Educational Communications Center (in Dole Hall) are doing the videotaping and post production.

The host of the new series is Karen Arnold of Topeka. Karen is a long-time daycare provider who loves to cook, especially with children. She is working closely with both Sandy and Kathy in developing recipes that are simple, fun to create, and nutritious.

KOAM-TV is hopefully the first of many Kansas stations to carry the series. In addition to Pittsburg, the series will hopefully run in all Kansas markets so that every family in Kansas will have access to Kids a Cookin'. In addition to the broadcast stations, the Department of Communications and FNP will produce "The best of Kids a Cookin'" on VHS videos and DVDs. The first videos and DVDs (in English and Spanish) should be available toward the end of this year.

Kids a Cookin' also has a companion website,  www.kidsacookin.ksu.edu , in both English and Spanish. The site contains video clips, recipes and other information to assist "limited income" families, and other families in Kansas. Check it out and let us know what you think!

It's anticipated that KOAM-TV will air the Kids a Cookin' programs in their early morning news program, "The Morning News," which airs between 5:30 and 7a.m. weekdays. No specific day and time have been decided.

If you want additional information on the Kids a Cookin' project, contact Ron Frank at rfrank@oznet.ksu.edu . --Ron Frank
