IN THIS ISSUE... ...A Multi-State Rural Response
Satellite Training: "Weathering Tough Times" A MULTI-STATE RURAL
RESPONSE SATELLITE TRAINING: "WEATHERING TOUGH TIMES" Although rural families are typically known to be self-sufficient, independent and resilient, these personal characteristics may cause problems when help is needed, both in accessing and obtaining resources. This training will update professionals (private and public sector) on the complex issues surrounding the farm, ranch and rural crisis. Information will be provided on behavioral health and management, family strengths, financial management and responsibilities, in addition to techniques that may be used to effectively respond to farmers, ranchers and rural businesspersons. Resources available to assist ranch, farm and rural families will be distributed in each state and on the web. We urge you to consider downlinking the satellite conference in your county and inviting key persons who work with rural families and rural issues in your communities. Consider inviting the people you usually network with for programming. Because of the requests we have received, you may want to include bankers and farm services, mental health staff, medical professionals, clergy or religious leaders, and public officials (County Commissioners, Economic Development Councils, Legislators). It may be possible for a coworker to team with you to facilitate the satellite downlink site and work with you in publicity and invitations. Because of the short time-frame with planning this training, some obvious scheduling conflicts, and the importance of this issue, Extension Administration at the University of Nebraska, Kansas State University and Iowa State University are providing a videotape for each Extension Office that may be used for in-service training or check-out by other agencies/businesses. If this type of program might meet some of your county/district needs as you work with rural families and these complex issues you may want to consider downlinking the satellite conference in your county. If you decide to downlink the satellite conference, your responsibilities will include publicizing the satellite teleconference and sending personal invitations to those who work with and support rural families. A benefit to downlinking the live satellite is that participants will be encouraged to call in or Fax questions. In addition, this may provide you with the opportunity to have a "Community Response Meeting" immediately following the satellite training. By networking with others at this time, you may determine other local needs and even a plan of action for your community. The satellite training for Extension Staff and other professionals who work with farm, ranch and rural families is planned for September 5, 2002, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. CT, and may be downlinked in your communities. More detailed information and how to downlink the training is available on the following web site: http://www.panhandle.unl.edu/tough_times/ . As well, the web site contains more information that will help you in publicizing the training. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact:
