WALK KANSAS TRAINING
We will be offering a Walk Kansas program again this spring. The physical activity program will encourage teams of six people to pool their mileage to walk, ride, or run across Kansas in eight weeks with their friends, families, or co-workers. Last year over 6,000 people from communities across the state joined in the challenge to become physically fit. If you would like to organize a Walk Kansas program in your county, attend one of the following trainings.

VOLUNTEERS REQUESTED TO HELP IN OUR BOOTHS AT THE KANSAS STATE FAIR
The College of Agriculture and K-State Research and Extension will once again have booths in the Pride of Kansas building at the Kansas State Fair. The State Fair runs from Friday, September 6, through Sunday,  September 15, 2002.

We will need people to work on both Fridays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 10 p.m.; Sunday-Thursday from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m.; and the last Sunday from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m.

You will see people from your part of the state, prospective students and their parents, old college friends, and many K-State alumni who come by the booths to visit. It is fun sharing information about the college and K-State Research and Extension with fair attendees.

If you would like to work in one or both of the booths, please contact Cassie Mitchell at 785-532-5729 or cmitchel@oznet.ksu.edu by August 23, and let her know which booth, day, and time is best for you. We will be in touch in late August after the start of the fall semester to finalize days, times, entrance tickets, transportation, etc. Thank you. --Jackie McClaskey jmcclask@oznet.ksu.edu and Steven Graham sgraham@oznet.ksu.edu

PETERSON PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT GRANTS AVAILABLE AGAIN
The Verlin H. Peterson Extension Agronomy Professional Development Fund was established in memory of the many contributions Verlin H. Peterson made to Extension Agronomy. Professional development awards up to $250 are available to recently appointed county agricultural agents (less than five years) or to graduate or undergraduate KSU students with an interest in Extension. Grants are made to defray costs in attending meetings, conferences, or workshops to enhance recipients agronomic skills.

In 2002, one award has been made. Over the years, events that recipients have attended and include the American Society of Agronomy, North Central Weed Science Society, Society for Range Management, Weed Science Society of America, Western Society of Weed Science, and Wheat Diagnostic School in Garden City. Other events of similar educational benefits also are eligible.

Interested agents should apply to Paul Ohlenbusch, Extension Agronomy, Throckmorton Hall, KSU, Manhattan, KS 66506-5504. Another request for applications and nominations will be made in March, 2003. --Paul D. 'Ole' Ohlenbusch pohlenbu@oznet.ksu.edu

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES
Although we are still bringing closure to the 4-H year through County and State Fair, preparations for the coming 4-H year are in full swing. As you are scheduling the activities and events you will offer youth to help them in their growth and development, remember to schedule some time for your own professional development.

Kansas Extension Youth Development offers three in-depth course opportunities this year for those who have youth development responsibilities. This group includes most of us within Extension. If you have not yet attended Moving Ahead: Preparing the Youth Development Professional, I encourage you to plan to attend the next offering of that course from January 14 through January 16, 2003 at Rock Springs 4-H Center. This training provides the foundation for working effectively with youth through 4-H (and other youth organizations). It will help you advocate for youth and for your work with them. It also has a 2 hour graduate credit course option for those working on a masters degree.

Two courses are available in learning about managing a 4-H program in Kansas. Basic 4-H Operations I is designed to help new agents understand the organizational details of Kansas Youth Development. While created for new agents, seasoned agents who have attended the course have found it to be extremely useful. Basic Operations I will be offered November 18-19 this fall. Originally scheduled for Hutchinson, the location is undetermined at this time but will be somewhere in the middle of the state.

Basic 4-H Operations II is designed for second year and beyond agents and provides training in program management issues relevant to the agent who has made it through the first year of 4-H youth development work. It is recommended for all agents regardless of the length of time they have been working with youth. Basic Operations II will be offered November 20-21at the same location at which Operations I is held.

A detailed explanation of these three course offerings will be arriving in your office at the close of the state fair. Please watch for them. And save dates on your schedule now to take advantage of these professional development opportunities. --Marcia McFarland mmcfarla@oznet.ksu.edu

Please note that the last publication listed, "Sustaining Progress," should be item number MF-2563, rather than the item number on the form. We regret the error. --Nancy Peavler npeavler@oznet.ksu.edu
