K-STATE RESEARCH AND EXTENSION ANNUAL CONFERENCE
Annual Conference is scheduled for October 21-24, at the K-State Student Union. The theme for this year’s conference is "Cornerstones, Courage, and Commitment." Online registration for both the conference and the poster session will be posted to the website soon at http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/annualconference/ . SEMINAR BY DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD WINNER

SEE THE JOURNAL OF EXTENSION
The August 2002 issue of the Journal of Extension features two articles contributed by K-Staters. 

"The Integration of Research and Extension: A Preliminary Study" by Rebecca Gould, Director, K-State Information Technology Assistance Center; and George Ham, Associate Director of Research (Emeritus); and "Producing Customized County Reports the Easy Way" by Janet Griesel, Extension Associate; and John  Leatherman, Associate Professor; both from the Department of Agricultural Economics, were included in the most recent edition of the Journal.

The Journal of Extension (JOE) is the peer-reviewed journal of the Cooperative Extension System. It seeks to expand and update the research and knowledge base for Extension professionals and other adult educators to improve their effectiveness. JOE is an electronic journal, available through access to the World Wide Web at http://www.joe.org/ . AUCTION
An Epsilon Sigma Phi endowment auction will be held during the Research Extension Annual Conference. This endowment fund enables ESP to provide grants and scholarships. Please plan now to donate an item for auction and to let me know by October 1 what this donation will be. 21ST CENTURY COMMUNITY LEARNING CENTER RFP ANNOUNCEMENT AND APPLICANT'S WORKSHOP
The Kansas Department of Education has announced that it is accepting applications for 21st Century Community Learning Centers program. Kansas has a total of $2.1 million for the 5-year grants. The full Request For Applications will be posted on the KSDE website very soon at www.ksde.org , and applications are due October 14. 2002.

The purpose of the Kansas 21st Century Community Learning Centers Program is to provide grants to applicants who are working to provide expanded learning (e.g., reading and math) and enrichment opportunities for children outside of the regular school hours. The Department encourages projects jointly submitted by school districts and community organizations with experience in providing before- or after-school services. It is anticipated that funds will be awarded for 7-10 projects beginning in January, 2003 that provide significant expanded learning opportunities for children and youth. All applicants must demonstrate how they will assist students to meet or exceed state and local standards in core academic subjects.

An Applicant's Workshop coordinated by the KU Institute for Educational Research and Public Service will be held at the Holiday Inn in Salina on Friday, September 6, 2002, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Prospective applicants may take a team to the workshop. COMMUNITIES IN SCHOOLS OF KANSAS (CIS-K) SPONSORING REGIONAL CONFERENCES
CIS-K is offering professional development training designed to equip community leaders, school administrators, and agency staff with skills needed to enhance organizational management, strengthen programs and expand outreach between school and community-based programs. The regional conferences are being held by CIS-K, 8 a.m.- 2:30 p.m. on September 17, in Garden City; September 18, in Wichita; and September 19, in Topeka. Registration is $30.

Presenters include national CIS trainers, coordinated school health trainers and representatives of K-State Research and Extension. WYANDOTTE COUNTY 4-H HAUNTED HOUSE
All County Extension Agents, county youth, and others are invited to attend the Wyandotte County 4-H Haunted House. The Haunted House is the main annual fund raiser for the 4-H clubs in the county.

The event is held the last two weekends in October. These dates are October 17-19, and October 24-26. The Haunted House is open to SCARE from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. On Saturday afternoons, from 4:30 to 6 p.m., there is a non scary time for younger children.

For groups of fifteen or more with advance reservations there is a $2 discount on the ticket costs. The regular ticket price is $5 per person. Children less than three years old get in free.

K-STATE OFFERS FINANCIAL PLANNING CERTIFICATE IN FALL
Kansas State University will be offering its Personal Financial Planning Certificate Program this fall, beginning October 6. The program prepares individuals for the Certified Financial Planner (CFPTM) Certification Examination.

Topics that will be covered include: Fundamentals of Family Financial Planning; Insurance Planning for Families; Personal Income Taxation; Investing for the Family's Future; Families, Employment Benefits and Retirement Planning; and Estate Planning for Families. The financial planning program at K-State is unique because it combines a faculty mentor, a small group of cohorts, Internet-based instruction, testing, and  affordability, offered in a one-year period. Students in the program may log into class 24 hours a day, seven days a week from any location that has Internet access.

Annual Conference Pick-Up
Remember to visit the Distribution Center in Umberger Hall during Annual Conference. Publications ordered between now and conference week may be available for pick-up at that time. Please be sure to specify pick-up when ordering.

All publications from the FACS Annual Series Order Form will be available for pick-up at that time. Please remember that someone from each county office should expect to pick up two bundles: one for the office order and another for the FCE groups in your county.

Please be sure that staff members who attend the conference are aware of the change in pick-up locations. (In other years, pick-up was off campus.)
