YOU ARE INVITED TO A GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY THIS FRIDAY
A groundbreaking ceremony for the new Bioprocessing and Industrial Value Added Program (BIVAP) facility will take place on Friday, September 13, at 11 a.m., on the site for the new Department of Grain Science and Industry complex on Kimball Avenue just northeast of the football stadium.

The BIVAP building will be the first of five buildings to be constructed on this site. The other four buildings will include the International Grains Program Executive Conference Center, a Flour Mill, a Feed Mill, and the Teaching, Research, and Administrative (TRA) building, which will also house the Department's Bakery Science and Management Program.

All facilities, when completed, will provide integrated programs to address the teaching, research, and outreach programs of the department to prepare our students to meet the challenges of post harvest cereal and oilseed marketing, processing utilization, and value added product development. It will be a five building complex which will contain facilities, equipment, and faculty and support personnel unmatched at any other university in the U.S.A. or the world.

If you plan to come to the event, you can park in the east stadium parking lot south of the Grain Science Complex property and walk across Kimball Avenue to the site of the ground breaking ceremony. --Brendan Donnelly bjd@wheat.ksu.edu

NEWS CONFERENCE TO ANNOUNCE KANSAS AGRABILITY SCHEDULED SEPTEMBER 14 AT KSF
All Research and Extension personnel who will be at the Kansas State Fair on September 14, are invited to help Kansas AgrAbility celebrate the official announcement of our grant award.

U.S. Congressman Jerry Moran will make the announcement at a news conference at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, September 14, at the Kansas Farm Bureau Tent,  just east of the Farm Bureau Arena on the Kansas State Fairgrounds in Hutchinson. The AgrAbility grant totals $590,982 for the next four years to help farmers, their families and farm workers with disabilities.

Featured at the news conference will be Congressman Moran; Kansas farmer Gene Delaney of Ness City, who is an advocate for disabled farmers; Julia Beems, Kansas AgrAbility Project Coordinator; and officials from K-State Research and Extension. The news conference will also feature a John Deere 5000 Series tractor that has been donated to Kansas AgrAbility by Deere & Company. The tractor will showcase adaptive devices available to farmers.

Plan to join us for rolls prior to the news conference and to meet Congressman Moran, the AgrAbility Staff and Extension Administrators. --Kerri Ebert Kebert@ksu.edu

STATE 4-H VOLUNTEER FORUM - SEPTEMBER 28-29
Registrations will be accepted until September 16 for the upcoming State 4-H Volunteer Forum at Rock Springs. "Gearing Up" for a New 4- H Year is the theme, with a variety of workshops designed to help new and seasoned volunteers get re-energized, re-focused, and re-juvenated!

Special features of the forum include the capstone speaker, Ron Willis, on Sunday morning as well as a general session on the outcomes of the state and national 4-H Conversations, facilitated by Ann Domsch.

Registration information was sent to all extension offices earlier this summer and we're hoping that you've been marketing and encouraging your volunteers to attend the forum, a project of the Kansas Association of  4-H Volunteers. Please be aware that the early-bird registration deadline of September 1 has passed and  that participants will now pay late fee of $15 in addition to the full-time or part-time registration fee.

If you should have any questions regarding the forum, please contact Ron Jones, Miami County, SE Area Vice-President; at ron.jones1@bayercropscience.com ; or Julie Green, Cherokee County, President-Elect; at  jgreen@stj.com . The Association will also have a display in the 4-H Exhibit Building at the State Fair. --Pat Fultz pfultz@oznet.ksu.edu

The last day an employee may use their 2002 Discretionary Day is Saturday, December 21, 2002. If you haven't used it yet, please look at your calendars and make plans to use it so it won't be lost.

WORKSHOP HELPS COMMUNITY LEADERS PREPARE BROADBAND GRANT APPLICATIONS
I received information on a grant writing workshop for community leaders interested in working on bringing   broadband into communities. If you are aware of any leaders in your communities who are trying to bring in broadband, or have that as a major goal, you might alert them to this training, via video streaming. I will also gain access to a video tape following the workshop.

In order to help community leaders prepare applications for the USDA Rural Utilities Service Community-Oriented Connectivity Broadband grant program, a workshop will be available at satellite downlink sites across Nebraska and northern Kansas on Tuesday, September 24 from 2:30-4 p.m. CT. The workshop is sponsored by the Nebraska Information Technology Commission, Technologies Across Nebraska, the University of Nebraska, USDA Rural Utilities Service, Congressman Tom Osborne, the Nebraska Rural Development Commission, and Kansas State University.

"The Community-Oriented Connectivity Broadband grant program provides an opportunity for rural economic, educational, medicinal and community development in Nebraska and Kansas. The workshop can help those rural Kansans and Nebraskans in taking full advantage of the program,” said Andre Boening, Rural Utilities Service field representative.

The USDA Rural Utilities Service Community-Oriented Connectivity Broadband program targets broadband transmission service in small, economically-challenged communities. More information on the program is available from the USDA Rural Utilities Service, http://www.usda.gov/rus/

The workshop will cover tips on researching available funding sources and writing grant applications; resources for conducting community information technology assessments; examples of community broadband deployment projects, and an overview of the RUS Community Connect program.

More information  on the workshop is available from the Web sites of the Nebraska Information Technology Commission, http://www.nitc.state.ne.us ; and Technologies Across Nebraska Web, http://technologiesacrossnebraska.unl.edu .  The workshop will be available in Kansas via streaming video from the Technologies Across Nebraska Web site. --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@oznet.ksu.edu
