REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE
Mitch Ricketts and I are hosting a session at annual conference focused
on safety issues related to 4-H trips and travel. One of the segments of
that workshop will be the presentation of guidelines to follow that
include a check list of things youth and adults need to keep in mind in
planning for any sort of travel event. We are soliciting your input for
that check list. If you have a check list you are currently using, or if
you have a particular travel tip that would help your colleagues, would
you send an e-mail note to either one or both of us. Our addresses are: mrickett@oznet.ksu.edu
and mmcfarla@oznet.ksu.edu .
Thank you for your help! --Marcia

eID AND KEAS UPDATE
The university's authentication project, KEAS, is progressing. The goal is
to match KSU computing IDs and OzNet IDs. IET is working closely with the university as it develops this
system. There are several ways IET and the university will provide
information and answer questions about KEAS. A website has been set up at http://accounts.oznet.ksu.edu/keas/
with information about the KEAS project. A poster session is planned for
Annual Conference to provide information about this project and how it
will affect OzNet and the accounts. IET staff will be at the poster
session to answer questions about KEAS. A website is being developed on
the university side to provide more information and answer some frequently
asked questions. Updates will be sent out in future Tuesday letters.
IET will be contacting users about KEAS
and their specific KSU eID and their OzNet account ID. --Kathryn Burton kburton@oznet.ksu.edu

FOOD ANIMAL
VETERINARIANS: AN ENDANGERED SPECIES?
The College of Veterinary Medicine will hold a national meeting at
Kansas State University on October 25-26, 2002, to discuss the growing
national (and international) shortfall in the numbers of food animal
veterinarians.
The level of interest in food animals by
current students indicates that this problem will only get worse. Recent
events (FMD, BSE, Bio-terrorism threats) have raised valid questions
concerning the capability of our food animal veterinary resources (i.e.
trained manpower) to adequately protect animal agriculture in this
country.
Please share word of this conference with
your local veterinarian or veterinary supply people.
For more information about the conference
(program and registration forms), go to the K-State College of Veterinary
Medicine home page http://www.vet.ksu.edu
, click on Continuing Education, then scroll down to October 25-26, 2002,
and click on the “Food Animal Veterinarians: An Endangered Species?”
title for more information. Or you may call conference organizer, Dr.
Peter Chenoweth, 785-532-5700; or e-mail Dr. Chenoweth at Peter@vet.k-state.edu

conference. --Steven Graham sgraham@oznet.ksu.edu
HEARTLAND
4-STATE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE TO BE HELD
Community leaders can pick up practical tips on creating real-life
rural development solutions at the 4-State Heartland Community Development
Conference, November 7-8, at Bartlesville, Oklahoma. "Everyone
interested in small community life and learning what successful
communities are doing," should attend, said Notie Lansford, Oklahoma
State University Cooperative Extension economist. "Local leadership
has been identified as one of the key factors in the economic health of
rural areas, but many times there is confusion as to how to turn a vision
of future growth into reality," Lansford said. Conference sessions
will showcase vital ingredients for small community survival in the 21st
Century, the value of community strategic planning and leadership
development.
The conference will take place at
Bartlesville's Holiday Inn, 1410 SE Washington Boulevard. Sessions will
begin at 11 a.m., Thursday, November 7. The conference will finish
following lunch on November 8. Cost is $65 per person if registering
before October 25; $70 thereafter.
Registration forms are available through
all OSU Cooperative Extension county offices or by contacting Lansford at
405-744-6555; or Dan Kahl at dkahl@oznet.ksu.edu
. --Dan Kahl

JOURNAL OF
LEADERSHIP EDUCATION (JOLE) NOW AVAILABLE ON WEB
A new electronic journal, the Journal of Leadership Education (JOLE), is
now available at http://www.fhsu.edu/cids/jole/jole.html
. The purpose of JOLE is to expand and update the research and knowledge
base of educators and practitioners and to share program ideas that
promote networking and discussion. The goal is to make this journal a
friendly but high quality source of information for anyone working with
groups in many different ways. I have an article on the history of the
Association of Leadership Educators (ALE), who sponsor this journal. You
do not have to be an ALE member to access the journal. --Katey Walker kwalker@oznet.ksu.edu
