ADDITIONAL
FIVE-YEAR PLAN STEERING COMMITTEE MEMBERS
Connie Hoch (CEA, FACS, Lyon County), and Dana Belshe (CEA, ANR,
Sherman County), have been added to the Five-Year Plan Steering Committee.
Please welcome them to this important system-wide effort in strategic

REVENUE GENERATION
IMPLEMENTATION COMMITTEE
An administrative committee has produced a draft document entitled “Principles,
Strategies, and Guidelines for Increased Alternative Revenue Streams in
the K-State Research and Extension System: Focus on Cooperative Extension
Programs.” This work was patterned after a similar policy developed and
implemented during 2001 at Iowa State University. We have established a
Revenue Generation Implementation Committee to facilitate further
understanding and acceptance within and (where appropriate) beyond our
organization as we adjust to a change in how we fund some of our programs.
This committee is being asked to review the draft guidelines and to
suggest ways to improve them and to determine how we can help employees
within our system put them into practice during the coming year. A related
charge to the committee is to help us identify existing revenue streams
(examples) that are being successfully employed to meet our goal of
providing “Knowledge for Life.” It is likely that the work of this
committee will extend into the coming fiscal year as we gain more
experience with revenue generation.
Daryl Buchholz, Assistant Director,
Extension Ag and Natural Resources, has agreed to chair this committee.
Members include: Carol Fink, 4-H Youth Development, Associate Extension
Specialist; Mikel Hadachek, 2003 State Extension Advisory Council Chair;
William Hargrove, Director, KCARE; Terry Kastens, Agricultural Economics,
Crop Production Economics; Dale Leikam, Agronomy, Nutrient Management; Jim
Lindquist, NE Area Director; Richard Miller, County Extension Director,
Johnson County; Glenn Newdigger, County Extension Agent, ANR, Stafford
County; Brian Olson, Crops and Soils Multi-county Specialist; Nancy
Peavler, Coordinator, Production Services, Communications; Chuck Smith,
Family Studies and Human Services, Human Development; John Smith, Interim
Extension State Leader, Animal Sciences and Industry; Jan Stephens, CEA,
FACS, Greenwood County; and Tom Warner, Department Head, Horticulture,
Forestry and Recreational Resources. Doug Elcock, Senior Business and
Finance Officer, will serve in an ex-officio (advisory) capacity. --Randy

HOW IS OUR RESEARCH AND EXTENSION WORK
IMPACTED BY THE INTERNET?
As indicated last week, we will have the opportunity to hear world
renowned researcher and author, Dr. Everett M. Rogers speak during our
K-State Research and Extension Annual Conference. On Thursday, October
24, Dr. Rogers will discuss "Applications of the Diffusion Model:
Spread and Consequences of the Internet." This presentation will
help us wrestle with the impact of the Internet on learning and our
newest challenge in diffusing innovations into society.
The day before, on Wednesday, October 23,
Dr. Rogers will speak about "Diffusion of Innovations: Role of
Research and Extension." This will be an overview of his work and
help us understand what we do in K-State Research and Extension and how
it applies to society.
Dr. Rogers is the world's expert when it
comes to this type of study. Roger's book, "Diffusion of
Innovations," was selected by Inc magazine as one of the 10
classic books in business. It is extraordinary to have Dr. Rogers
joining us for our Annual Conference. I encourage you to take in both of
these exciting presentations. --Steven Graham sgraham@oznet.ksu.edu

PEGASUS MAIL 4.02 IS NOW AVAILABLE FOR
K-STATE RESEARCH AND EXTENSION USERS
Pegasus Mail 4.02 is a major upgrade from what most county and area
offices are currently using. Pegasus Mail 4.02 offers better HTML
support to allow using fonts and pictures in a message, improved user
interfaces, the ability to keep attachments when forwarding a message,
and an optional three pane Preview mode similar to what is in Netscape
and Outlook. There are so many enhancements that a short message cannot
do Pegasus Mail 4.02 justice.
We have placed Pegasus Mail 4.02, along
with a short tutorial on the changes and full documentation, at the
support website so you can download them. Just go to: http://support.oznet.ksu.edu/intranet/apps.htm
.
Upgrading is easy; just run the installer
and pick the upgrade option. If you have any questions, feel free to call
Communications, IET at 785-532-6270, or e-mail Support@oznet.ksu.edu
or your computer support person. --Larry Havenstein lhavenst@oznet.ksu.edu
