your password for your eID since September, you will need to re-activate
your eID by going to http://www.ksu.edu/activateid/

ORGANIC
CERTIFICATION COST SHARE
The USDA Organic Certification Cost Share program is a new program
administered in Kansas by the Kansas Department of Agriculture. Many
growers have been asking questions, and are worried about missing the
application deadline. Before any producer applications can be accepted,
KDA must get approval from USDA for how the program will be run in
Kansas. When the applications are available for producers, all county
offices will be notified. Producers wanting to be notified directly that
applications are available can e-mail beckman@ksu.edu
to be put on a notification list. --Jana Beckman 532-1440
COPYRIGHT
ISSUES
At our recent 4-H Updates, the issue of copyright was addressed. Below
is an article that you can use for your newsletter informing your
leaders and members about copyright issues. I've included a website for
them to search to check if an item is copyrighted.
We will also have this article posted on
the State 4-H Website so that you may download it.
Use of Copyrighted Materials
At the 2002 Kansas State Fair, we had a person who is contracted to
look for copyright violations visit the 4-H Exhibit Building. He
informed us that some of our banners were in violation. Although we were
not fined, we were instructed to remind everyone of the rules.
Some of the banners in violation included
the following copyrighted items: © Precious Moments, © Spider Man, ©
Sponge Bob Squarepants, © Uncle Sam, © Garfield, © Harry Potter and
© Tigger.
The rule in the state fair book states:
“Copyright Laws: Exhibitors
should avoid using copyrighted materials whenever possible by
originating his/her own work. Exhibitors should use with caution a
copyrighted and /or trademarked product or service (a brand name, label
or product). The intent of using the copyright or trademark materials
for educational purposes such as an exhibit, educational poster/display
or public presentation is acceptable under the “Fair Use” (legal
use) provision. “Fair Use” is a provision of the current copyright
law that allows reproduction without payment or permission of limited
portions of a copyrighted work for educational and other public interest
purposes. A copyright and trademark are legal methods used by writers,
artists, corporations and others to protect their original work.
Protected items may range from books to music, logos to computer
graphics. Copyrighted and/or trademarked materials used in banners,
displays, demonstrations, posters or other activities for endorsement or
promotion instead of educational purposes will be disqualified and will
not be displayed or receive ribbons or premium.”
To search if an item is copyrighted, go
to the U.S. Copyright Office at www.copyright.gov/
. Click on Search Copyright Records. --Diane Mack dmack@oznet.ksu.edu
