DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATIONS CHANGES
The Department of Communications is starting the new year with a few
changes and reassignments. At the end of 2002, we said goodbye to Bob
Furbee and wished him well in his new position at Ohio State. Prior to
Bob's departure, the following changes were announced in the department.
Pat Melgares will become the department's
project coordinator, working on marketing, training, and
research/information support. He will also continue to write news
releases for the News Unit.
Mary Lou Peter has been named interim
News Unit coordinator.
Nancy Peterson will be returning to work
on January 6, 2003, as a communications specialist.
With all of these changes, there will be
some office relocations. Once office assignments are determined,
directory changes will be made. --Kristina Boone kboone@oznet.ksu.edu
DR. GUS VAN DER HOEVEN TO RECEIVE NADF
FREDERICK LAW OLMSTED AWARD
Leaders in tree planting, conservation, and environmental stewardship from
around the country and world are honored each year by The National Arbor
Day Foundation at the annual Arbor Day Awards celebration held in Nebraska
City, Nebraska. The National Arbor Day Foundation has announced that Dr.
Gus van der Hoeven has been selected to receive the National Arbor Day
Foundation's Frederick Law Olmsted Award for 2003. This nationally
prestigious award is given annually to an individual for work at the state
or regional level "whose work exemplifies commitment to tree planting
and conservation in improvement of America's communities and
landscapes."
Gus recently retired from Kansas State
University after 26 years as the Extension Specialist for Landscape and
Environmental Horticulture. His work efforts and passion to "create a
sense of place" were recognized by the NADF as contributing a great
deal to this state and region and the people who call it home. --Tom

LAST CHANCE TO ENROLL
IN JANUARY MOVING AHEAD TRAINING
Start the new year with three days of fun and productive professional
growth! There is still time to enroll in "Moving Ahead: Preparing the
Youth Development Professional" training to be held at Rock Springs
4-H Center, January 14-16. While Moving Ahead is required for new agents,
it covers material that is beneficial to experienced agents as well. You
can enroll until Thursday of this week by calling my office, 785-532-0781.
If you need additional time to secure a check for registration from your
board, we can make arrangements for that. Beth Hinshaw and Diane Mack will
be assisting me in the training next week and will assume responsibility
for the course after I retire at the end of this month. We look forward to
working with those of you who can attend! --Marcia McFarland mmcfarla@oz.oznet.ksu.edu
WATCH YOUR MAIL THIS WEEK...
The registration brochure for the United Association meeting will be sent
through the county packets and distribution this week. The conference will
be March 6 and 7, 2003, at the Sedgwick County Extension Education Center
in Wichita. This collaborative effort brings together five associations to
provide an outstanding array of professional development opportunities in
support of Kansas families. Early bird registration will be due February
1. Contact your association president for more information --- and watch
for additional e-mail announcements and the website posting. --Submitted
for KAE4HA, ESP, KEAFCS, KATFACS and KAFCS by Jodi Besthorn besthorn@oznet.ksu.edu
4-H DOG SHOW JUDGES CERTIFICATION
TRAINING
The new year has begun with only one opportunity for 4-H Dog Show
Judges to become certified. The training will be at the Sedgwick County
Extension Education Center, 21st and Ridge Road, Wichita, February 1-2, 2003.
This is a good time for older members
and project leaders to become familiar with what judges are looking for!
Registrations are due to State 4-H Office BEFORE January 22!! Check your
e-mail or hard copy sent November 18 for details. We must have at least 20
people to make this training feasible! --Jim Adams jadams@oznet.ksu.edu
PROFESSIONAL
DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITY
Excelling as a First-time Manager or Supervisor is a workshop offered
at several locations in Kansas (and Kansas City, Missouri) between
February 14, and March 28, 2003. For additional information about this
presentation by SkillPath Seminars, call 1-800-873-7545.
This may be worthwhile for those with new
supervisory/managerial responsibilities or with little or no formal
training in supervision. Consider this one-day workshop to learn essential
skills and knowledge (i.e., delegating, communicating, hiring, conflict
resolution, working with difficult people). --Marie Blythe mblythe@oznet.ksu.edu
CONFERENCE ON KANSAS WATER CHALLENGES TO BE
OFFERED IN MANHATTAN
The twentieth annual Water and the Future of Kansas Conference will be
held March 11, 2003, at the Holiday Inn in Manhattan. The conference is a

Agricultural Resources and the Environment, the Kansas Water
Resources Institute, and the U.S. Geological Survey.
Various topics will be discussed through
