NW AREA EXTENSION DIRECTOR ANNOUNCEMENT
We appreciate the investments of applicants, the search committee, and colleagues who chose to participate in the NW Area Extension Director search. We are pleased to announce that Dr. Dan O’Brien, Extension Agricultural Economist – NW, has agreed to assume the title of Northwest Area Extension Director beginning June 8, 2003. SE AREA BEEF CATTLE & FORAGE CROPS FIELD DAY TO BE HELD THURSDAY, MAY 1

EMILY NOLTING EARNS PH.D.
Emily Nolting, Metropolitan Area Multi-County Commercial Ornamental Landscape Horticulture Specialist, has completed doctoral requirements from the University of Nebraska. Her Ph.D. is in Curriculum, Instruction and Administration from the Higher Education Leadership and Administration program of the Department of Educational Administration. Dr. Nolting's dissertation topic was Business Strategies of Successful Leaders in Ornamental Horticulture.

4-H CURRICULUM NEEDS SURVEY
I will soon be asked to respond to a national CCS survey as to the greatest curriculum needs in the state of Kansas that might also be appropriate nation wide. Thus, I am asking for you to respond to me by May 10! To help with your decisions, I will list what is currently being developed and the projected year (fall) that it will be available. I will also ask you to rank a few areas that are being considered.

WHEAT DIAGNOSTIC SCHOOL
The wheat diagnostic school will be on Tuesday and Wednesday May 13-14, 2003 at the Southwest Research and Extension Center near Garden City. The program begins at 8 a.m. on the 13th. This hands-on field training will be a great refresher for experienced agents and an excellent opportunity for agents needing to learn about wheat.

Lunches will be provided both days and the evening meal on the 13th will also be provided. The cost of the training is $65 to agents and KSU personnel who would like to participate. Please sign up by simply e-mailing  your intentions to Curtis Thompson, SW Area Crops and Soils Specialist at cthompso@oznet.ksu.edu  or by calling the SW Area Extension office at 620-275-9164. 4-H YOUTH DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIC PLANNING COMMITTEE
Appointment has been made to a committee of 19 individuals to work toward the development of the next 4-H Youth Development Strategic Plan. The planning committee has been asked to confirm a vision and mission for 4-H Youth Development, identify strategic objectives to strengthen and increase membership in Kansas 4-H, and create a process of broad review, input, and eventual acceptance of the strategic objectives by those interested in the future of Kansas 4-H.

Members of the committee include: Ron Alexander, Jodi Besthorn, Joel DeRouchey, Richard Fechter, Pat Fultz, Beth Hecht, Linda Henningsen, Gordon Hibbard, Nancy Honig, Elaine Johannes, Glenn Newdigger, Diane Mack, David McCandless, Charlotte Olsen, Bill Riley, Lucas Shivers, Nadine Sigle, Linda Thurston, and Aliesa Woods. Marcia Walsh and Dan Kahl are facilitators, and I am in an ex-officio role. The group will begin the process with an initial meeting on May 28. NATIONAL 4-H AFTERSCHOOL INITIATIVE
Members of the State 4-H Afterschool Initiative Team just returned home from the National 4-H Afterschool Roll-Out Conference in St. Louis.

We are making plans to share with you what we learned and the resources we were given. We are excited about sharing this information so that you too can be involved with 4-H Afterschool. Be watching for more details.

NEW DISTANCE EDUCATION CATALOG AVAILABLE
K-State's Division of Continuing Education's new Distance Education catalog for the Summer 2003 through Spring 2004 semesters is now available. The catalog offers information on degrees available through distance education, as well as a listing of courses for the upcoming semesters. Additional information is listed including information on scholarships and financial aid, contact information, registration, and delivery methods. The Division of Continuing Education offers courses year-round that meet degree requirements through distance education. Many courses meeting general education requirements are also offered at a distance so students can fulfill their requirements from home.
