TORNADO DAMAGE RELIEF EFFORTS
The devastating storms and tornados that passed through Cherokee, Crawford, Labette, Neosho, Wyandotte, Leavenworth, and Miami Counties on Sunday, May 4, resulted in loss of life and considerable damage to property in those areas.  Those storms remind us of the importance of disaster preparedness and response.  If you are interested in updating your disaster materials, you can go to the Extension Disaster Education Network (EDEN) web site at www.agctr.lsu.edu/eden/ .  This is the national web site with all the disaster information.  Much is focused on homeland security, but if you go to that page and check out the resource links along the left side, you will get into a comprehensive search engine on all sorts of disaster resource materials.  The latest version (1998) of the National Disaster Handbook can also be found at http://disaster.ifas.ufl.edu/ .

With the tornados, you likely have caring individuals and groups seeking ways to provide for support to the victims of these storms.  The best way to provide support is in cash gifts to community-based organizations.  Two such organizations are the American Red Cross and Salvation Army.  You can direct clubs and groups to the American Red Cross web site, http://www.redcross.org/  to locate the nearest Red Cross site serving your area.  Similarity, the Salvation Army contacts can be found through http://www.salvationarmyusa.org/ .  Any other forms of support are best coordinated through that Red Cross or Salvation Army contact.  Your contributions can be made through that local contact to support those disaster victims of the recent storms. --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@oznet.ksu.edu
