CONGRATULATIONS
TO US
There have been a number of fine comments shared regarding county fairs
this year via the media and through unsolicited communications. Creative
and traditional educational programming in FCS (the new designation for
FACS) and a host of quality field days/farm visits/open houses/technical
updates, along with many other efforts, continue to demonstrate the
importance and relevance of K-State Research and Extension. Those involved
know first-hand the tremendous amounts of planning and effort required for
these events to operate smoothly. When combined effectively, our people,
programs, and right-time/right-place/right-content/right-format
information serve to showcase what KSRE has to offer. --Randy Higgins rhiggins@oznet.ksu.edu
KSRE FIVE-YEAR PLAN
PROGRESS
Marie Blythe has returned almost all long-term intended outcome
statements to designated writing team leaders. She has been reformatting
the work completed thus far so it matches a common template (title,
background, 2 to 5 strategy statements/LTIO that include tactics,
resources/inputs needed, an evaluation plan with key indicators of
success, non-faculty participants and collaborators, and a communications
section).
Leaders should be working with
collaborators to fill in the gaps for their LTIO statement. Marie and the
co-chairs are scheduling meetings with writing teams to help move the
process forward. --Randy Higgins rhiggins@oznet.ksu.edu
and Forrest Chumley fchumley@oznet.ksu.edu
LIVESTOCK
JUDGING IN SCOTT CITY

HELP NEEDED AT
STATE FAIR - 4-H
The State 4-H staff could use your assistance in setting up the 4-H
fair building in Hutchinson, Thursday, August 21, starting at 10 a.m.
Besides fewer staff members, more displays will be moved in from other
buildings and large project displays such as photography take multiple
people to set up. If you or some of your volunteers have time that day
to assist with setup, it would be greatly appreciated.
In the past, Lindy has been available in
the 4-H building during the week to answer questions about the displays
and how to join 4-H. We feel this public relations outreach is important
and should continue if possible. We would appreciate your help to man
the booth in the 4-H building. Assistance is needed Monday through
Friday, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Give Jim Adams a call at 785-532-5800, or
e-mail him at jadams@oznet.ksu.edu
, if you would be available one of these days. --Carol Fink cfink@oznet.ksu.edu
KANSAS STATE FAIR
ENTRY CARDS
The first printing of the 2003 Kansas State Fair entry cards was
done on August 6. After the cards have been perforated, they will be
sent to the appropriate counties or districts unless you have arranged
with the State 4-H Office to pick them up in 201 Umberger. The
cards will be sent by first class postage. This first printing included
entries made before August 7. Look for additional mailings in the weeks
ahead. Please note that if you had less than 10 entries by August 6,
your cards will be sent with the next mailing. Any questions may be
directed to Cheryl Thomas at the State 4-H Office, 785-532-5800, or
e-mail her at cthomas@oznet.ksu.edu
. --Jim Adams jadams@oznet.ksu.edu
VOLUNTEERS
STILL NEEDED TO HELP IN OUR BOOTHS AT THE KANSAS STATE FAIR
The College of Agriculture and K-State Research and Extension will
once again have adjoining booths in the Pride of Kansas Building at the
Kansas State Fair. The fair runs from Friday, September 5, through
Sunday, September 14, 2003.
We will need people to work in the two
booths on both Fridays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., Sunday -
Thursday from 9 a.m. till 9 p.m., and the last Sunday from 9 a.m. till
7p.m.
We would certainly appreciate it if
faculty and staff from campus, county offices, Agronomy Fields, and
Research-Extension Centers would go to the fair and work for several
hours on any one day. Also, we would appreciate agents and/or faculty,
who are going to the fair anyway, signing up to work a couple hours in
the booth before or after your activities. It is fun sharing information
about K-State and K-State Research and Extension.
If you would like to work in one or both
of the booths, please contact Cassie Mitchell at 785-532-5729 or cmitchel@oznet.ksu.edu
as soon as possible. Please tell her which booth you want to work in and
which day and times are best for you. We will be in touch soon afterward
with the final schedule plus send tickets, work out transportation, etc.

VOLUNTARY
ADULT HEALTH INFORMATION FORM
A Voluntary Adult Health Information Form is now available on the
Research and Extension Safety Web site at http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/agsafe/forms/Health%20Info%20Form.pdf
. The form is designed to be used for emergencies involving adults on
Extension trips and for Extension employees at county and area offices.
In the past, we have sometimes had trouble getting hospitals to provide
treatment for adults who were incapacitated.
This form addresses the information and
signatures most often required by hospitals. The form is voluntary--each
adult decides whether or not to fill it out. The form was developed by a
committee consisting of Lois Carlson, Carl Garten, and Janice Lierz. The
form has been reviewed by Jay Reppert from Lafene Health Center, by
Cheryl Strecker from the University Attorney's Office, and by Extension
Administration. If you use the form for adult participants, just have
them fill it out and give it to you in a sealed envelope with their name
on it prior to the trip or activity. In the event of a medical
emergency, give the envelope to healthcare personnel so they can provide
assistance. If an emergency does not occur, return the unopened envelope
to the participant at the end of the trip.
Employees may also complete the form so
they can receive treatment if they become incapacitated. A new form
should be completed each year. All completed health forms should be
treated as confidential. Please note that this form is not to be used
for 4-H activities, as 4-H has its own forms. --Mitch Ricketts - Health,
Safety, and Environmental Coordinator mrickett@oznet.ksu.edu

STATE 4-H
CONTESTS FOR 2004
A process of defining the most logical and appropriate time and
location for the various state 4-H judging contests, skill-a-thons, and
quiz bowls has been underway. Where an action team exists,
recommendations from that action team are being implemented. Where no
action team exists, the coordinator, along with those in close
leadership roles, have provided insight and input into decisions about
the time and location for the 2004 state 4-H contests. Following is a
rundown of current/pending decisions on the state contests:
Horticulture - Wichita Garden Show -
Saturday, March 6, 2004
Photography - 2004 Kansas State Fair - Sunday, September 12, 2004
FCS Judging / Quiz Bowl - TBD
Livestock - KSU Campus - Date TBD
Livestock Skill-a-thon - KSU Campus - Date TBD
Dairy Judging / Quiz Bowl - Kansas Junior Dairy Show - August 2004
Horse - Douglas County - June 29, 2004
Poultry - 2004 Kansas State Fair - Saturday, September 18, 2004
Crops - 2004 Kansas State Fair - Saturday, September 11, 2004
Meats - Excel, Wichita - August 2004
Dog Quiz Bowl - Rock Springs - November 2004
Several leave some decisions to be made.
As these decisions do come forward, announcements will be made. We
believe the decisions on moving the horticulture, livestock judging, and
dairy judging to the different events/locations will result in better
contests with the opportunity for more comprehensive educational
opportunities for the young people involved.
Photography will continue to have an
educational activity associated with the Wichita Garden Show, but the
state contest is better suited to take place at the Kansas State Fair.
Family & Consumer Sciences 2004 contest/quiz bowl events are still
under discussion of the FCS Action Team. --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@oznet.ksu.edu
CREATING NEW
POSSIBILITIES FOR YOUR COMMUNITY
The Harwood Institute for Public Innovation offers a great workbook
to help spark civic engagement in communities. "Let's Step It Up:
Creating New Possibilities for Your Community" outlines a 4-step
process that helps residents identify the challenges facing their
community, where they can have the greatest impact, and concrete steps
to make progress. Users are guided through each of the four steps by a
series of questions intended to generate discussion within the
community. The workbook is available online at: http://www.theharwoodinstitute.org/pdf/lsiu.pdf
