MARKETING
EFFORT TO REACH K-STATE BASKETBALL FANS
One of the new marketing efforts for K-State Research and Extension
this year includes a game-day sponsorship during the K-State women's
basketball season. K-State Research and Extension will be the sole
sponsor for the November 5 game against Washburn University. The
awareness campaign includes K-State Research and Extension's logo and
Web site address in the women's basketball program throughout the
2003-2004 season. This effort was originally planned by Steven Graham,
Linda Sleichter and Pat Melgares after discussion earlier this year with
the statewide marketing advisory committee. --Pat Melgares melgares@oznet.ksu.edu
IT'S TIME TO REGISTER
FOR ANNUAL CONFERENCE!
“Road Map to Excellence” is the theme for the K-State Research and
Extension Annual Conference. The conference will be January 6 through
January 9, in the K-State Student Union. Prior conferences were Monday
through Thursday. To allow for an additional day in the office after the
holidays, this year’s conference begins on Tuesday with the traditional
information and organizational meetings and ends with the awards luncheon
on Friday.
A schedule of events with descriptions and
times for all sessions will be available on the Web site, www.oznet.ksu.edu/annualconference/
, with a link to a secure site for online registration. REGISTRATIONS
ARE DUE DECEMBER 10.
Please note that there will not be a poster
session at the Tuesday evening reception. The reception will have a
Hawaiian theme, so don’t pack away those Hawaiian shirts and muumuus for
the winter.
The Epsilon Sigma Phi banquet will be at
the Alumni Center on January 8. The reception will be at the Wildcat Den
at 6 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:30 in the Banquet Room. ESP is
celebrating its 75 anniversary. The event is catered by Capers from
Salina, and the cost is $20. There will be a silent auction. For more
details about the ESP banquet, contact Vicky Overley or Karen Blakeslee.

"Happy Trails to You" party for Warren W Bell on Thursday,
November 13, from 3 to 7 p.m. in the Coffey County Courthouse Basement
(110 S. 6th) in Burlington. If you have any pictures, cards, or memories
of Warren's 29 years as Ag Agent, you may send them to Linda Salava, PO
Box 269, Burlington, KS 66839, and we will compile them in a notebook
for Warren. --Linda Salava lsalava@oznet.ksu.edu
FORESTRY
COOPERATIVE SATELLITE CONFERENCE
A national satellite teleconference on Forestry Cooperatives will be
broadcast Tuesday, November 18. A downlink site has been set up with the
USDA field office in Lyndon, Osage County. The program is aimed at
resource professionals, and includes case studies from five cooperatives
across the country. Several groups in Kansas have already expressed an
interest in forming a forestry-related co-op, including the Lake
Region RC&D Council, and the Kansas Forest Products
Association.
There is no charge for the program, but
please let me know if you will be attending, so enough copies can be
made of the conference handouts. Registration begins at 1 p.m., with the
broadcast running from 1:30 to 4 p.m.
Questions from the audience will be
answered live, during the broadcast. --Charlie Barden cbarden@oznet.ksu.edu
MICROSOFT
DROPPING SUPPORT FOR OLD OPERATING SYSTEMS
Microsoft has informed its users that it will drop support for the
Windows 95, 98 and NT operating systems January 16, 2004. This means
that they will not longer provide security updates or patches. The
university will be taking steps to decrease network security risks. IET
staff believes that lingering security holes will continue to be
exploited by hackers creating a high risk to our networks and computers.
Therefore we have put together the following options to address this
concern. If you have a Windows 95, 98, or NT operating system you can...
--- Do nothing and your computer may be
exploited by hackers. If that happens your computer may be removed from
the network.
--- Determine if your computer can be upgraded to Windows XP. The
hardware requirements to do so include a CPU operating at 300 Mhz or
higher, a minimum of 256 Mb RAM and at least 1 gigabyte of free hard
disk space. Computers meeting these minimal requirements may run slow.
--- Replace the computer.
--- Install a software firewall which can be configured to provide
Internet security. IET will provide a firewall product free of charge.
This is intended to be an interim solution.
We will ask the departmental computer
support representative to identify computers that have the Windows 95,
98 or NT operating systems. We will also ask them to help determine the
course of action to take with each computer. Some departments have
already taken action.
County extension offices should review
their technology plans and update them. Check with your area computer
support person or call IET to receive help in determining an appropriate
course of action. --Roger Terry rterry@oznet.ksu.edu
