"UNLOCKING PROGRAM POTENTIAL THROUGH KEY VOLUNTEERS"
At the 4-H Update, the “Unlocking Program Potential through Key Volunteers” was announced. This Pilot Program will be held on Tuesday, December 2, 2003, McPherson County 4-H Building, in McPherson, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lunch will be provided.

In Kansas 4-H we have implemented VIP, local programs conduct volunteer orientation and training, and our programs do have a strong volunteer base. Why not build upon these things to strengthen your overall 4-H youth development program with needs-based 4-H volunteer management roles and successful recruitment strategies?

This program is brought to you with no registration fee, through an Epsilon Sigma Phi Program Innovation Grant. Workshop presenters will include  Diane Mack, Beth Hinshaw, Rod Buchele, Walter Barker, and Pat McNally. Additional training follow-up for volunteers will be available through the State 4-H Volunteer Association.

Please e-mail Karen Walters at kwalters@oznet.ksu.edu  by November 25, 2003, to RSVP for the December program. If you registered at a 4-H Update, you will be receiving an e-mail confirmation. If you are interested in the program, but the date or location does not work, please indicate that, so we can use this for our next planning phase. If you would like a copy of the brochure, please request it from Karen Walters. --Beth Hinshaw bhinshaw@oznet.ksu.edu  and Diane Mack dmack@oznet.ksu.edu

RESEARCH AND EXTENSION PROGRAMS AWARDED FUNDS TO LEAD INITIATIVES TO IMPROVE HEALTH OF KANSAS YOUTH
Seven county Research and Extension programs have received funds from K-State Research and Extension’s Community Health Institute to lead planning efforts to improve the health of local youth. The $5,000 Healthy Youth Places: Research-to-Practice Hub awards are helping K-State Research and Extension establish and support community-based partnerships that increase healthy eating and physical activity and improve social development among Kansas school-age youth.

Through a twelve-month planning and implementation effort, local Research and Extension professionals are applying research-based strategies to local problems with the technical and evaluation assistance of the Community Health Institute. In addition to leading community partnerships, the Research and Extension professionals provide training, management assistance and knowledge dissemination to organizations in their communities that address youth-related health issues.

Research and Extension professionals receiving the awards for their programs are:
* Peggy Berrier Boyd, Wyandotte County
* Beth Hecht, Leavenworth County
* Martha Murphy, Crawford County
* Cathy Musick, Gove County; and Tranda Watts, NW Multi-County Food, Nutrition, Health and Safety Specialist; with Cheryl Goetz (Gove County Health Department)
* Diane Nielson, Atchison County
* Trudy Rice, Douglas County
* Ann Sparke, Morris County with Gail Daugherty (USD 417 - 21st Century Community Learning Center).

The competitive proposals from these professionals were selected for funding due to the strength of their on-going local collaborations (e.g., health departments, school districts, and after school organizations), their interest in health outcomes programming and support of applying research to solve local problems.

The Healthy Youth Places Research-to-Practice initiative is a project of the Community Health Institute with funds from the Kansas Health Foundation. --Elaine Johannes ejohanne@oznet.ksu.edu
