4-H EVENT COORDINATOR INTERVIEW SCHEDULE
4-H Event Coordinator interviews will be Monday, January 26, via Polycom at the Northwest, Southwest, and Southeast Area Extension offices, and in Umberger 317 in the morning and  Umberger 125 in the afternoon.

NO-TILL ON THE PLAINS WINTER CONFERENCE
The No-Till On The Plains Winter Conference will be January 26-27, 2004, at the Bicentennial Center in Salina.  The conference will run from 12 noon to 7 p.m. on Monday, January 26; and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, January 27.

This year’s theme is Reward for Change. There will be a blockbuster array of speakers and classroom sessions.  The cost is $65 if you pre-register before Wednesday, January 21; or pay $80 at the door.  There is no charge for spouses. You will receive a Leading Edge magazine subscription free with registration.

STRENGTHENING YOUTH NUTRITION AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY PROGRAMS
The 4-H Youth Development Office and FNP are sponsoring a training to improve the skills of those who teach nutrition and physical activity education to youth. Non-FNP staff are encouraged to attend this training. The training will help staff develop the background to achieve the greatest impact for school-aged-youth. The training has been designed to help staff to:

understand the philosophy and principles of youth development in the area of nutrition

increase knowledge of basic developmental needs and tasks of children

recognize the influence on a youth’s development that is created by the interaction between a youth and the environments in which he/she lives, and

provide the skills necessary to design and deliver programs that are effective in promoting positive youth development in the area of nutrition and physical activity.

Trainings are February 3, Dighton; February 5, Emporia; and February 6, Manhattan from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Registration is due January 26. A registration form can be found on the 4-H web site at www.oznet.ksu.edu/4h . Carol Fink cfink@oznet.ksu.edu 

 

JUNIOR MASTER GARDENER TEACHER/LEADER TRAINING
A Junior Master Gardener Teacher/Leader training will be held Wednesday, February 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Deal Six Auditorium, Douglas County Extension Office, 2110 Harper Street, Lawrence, Kansas.

The all day training will include information on the Junior Master Gardener program, the JMG curriculum, and how to work with youth. The workshop will also feature hands-on activities. This program is open to all interested extension agents, Master Gardeners, 4-H leaders, and volunteers, and is recommended for anyone working with a Junior Master Gardener group.

PASSWORD CHANGE REMINDER
THE UNIVERSITY'S eID PASSWORD CHANGE DEADLINE IS FEBRUARY 11, 2004.  Please change your KSU eID and OzNet passwords between January 1 and February 11. On February 11, all KSU eID accounts with unchanged passwords will be deactivated.

To change your KSU eID password, log in to your eID profile at http://eid.k-state.edu . Even if you don't use KSU computing services you need to change this password.

To change your OzNet password, go to http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/changepassword .

HEALTH RISK APPRAISAL - 2004
Employees who chose to participate in the 2004 Health Risk Appraisal will receive a postcard from MOST Healthcare Systems advising the employee to make a health screening appointment. A mobile van from MOST Healthcare Systems will be in Manhattan from February 2 through February 26, to conduct the health screening part of the 2004 Health Risk Appraisal. The mobile van will be located in parking lot C1 (east of Bramlage Coliseum). Access is available through Gate 9 off Kimball Avenue.

The toll free telephone number for making an appointment is 1-800-778-8889 (voice). The TTY telephone number is 1-800-766-3777.

FRONTPAGE WEB AUTHOR TRAINING
IET (Information and Educational Technology) will be offering a half-day class in creating and maintaining a successful Web site. This class is aimed at beginner and intermediate Web authors. We plan to cover the usage of text, tables for layout, hyperlinks, inserting digital images, templates and to look at many other features packaged in FrontPage 2002. Current classes are scheduled for Wednesday., February 4, and Wednesday, March 3, 8 a.m.-12 p.m., in 317 Umberger Hall.

CATTLEMEN'S PROFITABILITY CONFERENCE IN SMITH CENTER
The Cattlemen's Profitability Conference will be held on Wednesday, February 4, at the Smith Center National Guard Armory, Smith Center, Kansas. This event will feature a conference that addresses current topics in the beef industry.

Speakers for the event will be Dr. Dale Blasi, K-State Research and Extension Livestock specialist - Topic: "National Livestock Identification and Available Technology;" Dr. James Mintert, K-State Research and Extension Livestock marketing specialist - Topic: "Market Strategies for livestock and Outlooks;" and Dr. Rodney Jones, K-State Research and Extension Livestock production/marketing specialist - Topic: "How to plan a successful Beef Cow Lease." In addition, KSU Beef Specialist Sandy Johnson will give a presentation on "Replacement Heifer Development," and Dr. Vincent Traffas, DVM, will provide information on "Checking your Herd Health Record along with a BSE update."

A trade show will also be featured at this event and will be open from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Other breaks during the program will allow producers to view the displays. This event would be an excellent opportunity for producers to expand their marketing efforts and make contacts with cattlemen from a large area of Kansas and Nebraska cow country. To achieve these marketing contacts, producers will have a chance to listen to cutting edge speakers along with viewing displays at the trade show.

Deadline for pre-registration for the program is Friday, January 30, to the Smith County Extension Office. Fee for the conference is $5, which includes program materials and a noon meal of baked steak and the trimmings. A fee of $7.50 will be charged at the door.

"THE RELEVANCE OF THE LAND GRANT MISSION IN THE 21ST CENTURY"
Dr. James R. Coffman will be giving a lecture on "The Relevance of the Land Grant Mission in the 21st Century" on Tuesday, February 10, in the KSU Alumni Center Ballroom at 3 p.m. Dr. Coffman is Provost and Professor of Clinical Sciences at Kansas State University. Before becoming the Provost in 1987, he was Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine. 

Dr. Coffman has authored or co-authored over one hundred scientific papers and has served as an editorial board member or as editor of five major journals. He was president of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (1978-79) and of the American Association of Equine Practitioners (1986).
