NELLIS RETURNING
TO K-STATE AS PROVOST
M. Duane Nellis has been named K-State's next provost. He will
succeed James Coffman, who will step down as provost in July. Nellis has
served as dean of the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West
Virginia University since 1997. Prior to his time at West Virginia, he
spent 17 years at K-State, progressing from assistant professor of
geography to professor and head of the department. He then became senior
associate dean of K-State's College of Arts and Sciences. He was the
first director of K-State's Institute for Social and Behavioral
Research.
Nellis earned his Ph.D. in 1980 and his
master's degree in 1977 -- both in geography and both from Oregon State
University. He earned a bachelor's degree in geography from Montana
State University in 1976.
The deans of nine academic
colleges, the libraries, the Graduate School and the Division of
Continuing Education and other university offices report to the provost.

SIRT WARNING
REGARDING LATEST VIRUS PROBLEMS
The K-State Security Incident Response Team (SIRT) issued the following warning
regarding the latest virus problems. These virus messages have faked
addresses and contents, in an attempt to lower your guard. BE CAUTIOUS!
"Attention, all K-Staters:
There is a new e-mail worm out that poses a high risk to the
K-State community. K-State's Symantec antivirus software may not
reliably detect it, and it might get through the antivirus filters on
the central e-mail server. This makes YOU the last and most important
line of defense!
IT IS LIKELY YOU WILL RECEIVE A COPY OF THIS WORM. It arrives as
e-mail with a .ZIP file attached, along with a password to unlock
it. The actual worm is encrypted inside the .ZIP file, making it
difficult for us to scan and block.
WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:
1. If you get e-mail with an attachment you're not expecting, DELETE IT.
2. If you think it might be legitimate,
verify the e-mail with the person who sent it BEFORE YOU OPEN THE
ATTACHMENT. If you have any doubts, delete it.
3. After deleting any suspicious e-mail, empty your Trash folder."
Don't respond to the faked messages. The
reply-to has likely been faked as well and a reply will simply clog the
system even more. --Mary Knapp mknapp@oznet.ksu.edu
KSU
AGENT UPDATE 2004 PROGRAM -
ENTOMOLOGY & PLANT PATHOLOGY - MARCH 15-18
Training Dates &
Locations:
March 15, 2004: Manhattan
(K-State Union Room 213)
March 16, 2004: Chanute (SE Area Office)
March 17, 2004: Garden City (SW Area Office)
March 18, 2004: Hays (Hays Experiment Station)
The program for the 2004
KSU Agent Update had been developed. The central focus
is the curriculum designed for first detectors (i.e., extension agents,
crop consultants, and ag industry personnel) by the Great Plains
Diagnostic Network in conjunction with the National Plant Diagnostic
Network. The primary objectives are to prepare those in the field to
identify new pests and pathogens, the proper protocol for sample
collection and submission, and the communication protocol necessary to
facilitate a rapid diagnosis of a new pest or pathogen. The workshop is
structured to include presentations and hands-on sessions for digital
photography and the new PDIS software system for sample
submission.
As an incentive for
completion of the workshop curriculum and completion of the workshop
evaluation, agents will be offered the equivalent of $100 in free sample
submissions to use during the current season. This could be 10 x $10
samples, or 20 x $5 samples. This effort is an important part of a
national program to achieve a state of preparedness for the introduction
of new pests or pathogens. Oh, and lunch will be provided.
Please take this
seriously and participate. Certificates of completion will be awarded to
those who complete all modules of the workshop and letters of
appreciation forwarded to regional directors and KSU
administration.
NOTE:
1) Since lunch is being
provided, please e-mail Diana Pavlisko, dpavlisk@ksu.edu
, to let her know which training location you will attend. This will
give us a head count for the meals.
2) Please bring your
digital camera, camera accessories, and camera manual.
3) Please bring your
laptop computer. Serif photo plus should be installed on your computer
prior to the workshop. Copies can be obtained from Gary Kepka at
785-532-6270. --Diana Pavlisko

MASTER 4-H
VOLUNTEER PROGRAM
We are excited to announce the launching of the Master 4-H Volunteer
Program for the Kansas 4-H Program! This is a project of the Kansas
Association of 4-H Volunteers, under the leadership of Linda Henningsen,
Saline County 4-H Volunteer.
Announcement of this program took place
at the 4-H Updates last fall. In addition, a number of counties
participated in the "Unlocking Your Program Potential with Key
Volunteers" during the past couple of months. At that time, the
participants identified key positions and tasks, wrote job descriptions,
and were challenged to begin the process to fill those positions with
key or master volunteers.
A message and brochure was electronically
sent March 3 to all Extension offices. The brochure outlines the
purpose, objectives and timeframe for the training sessions and includes
the registration form. Please make and distribute copies of this
brochure as needed in your county/district.
You will note that the first preliminary
session takes place April 3, in McPherson. Additional preliminary
training sessions will take place August 28 (Emporia) and October 16
(Scott City). This session is open to anyone interested in 4-H volunteer
programs. To attend the Master Volunteer Training, November 19-20,
attendance at the preliminary session is required.
Registrations for the April 2 session
will be accepted until March 26 in the State 4-H Department.
Thank you for giving serious
consideration to taking your 4-H program to a higher level by the
utilization of Master 4-H Volunteers. Questions? You may contact any of
the Area 4-H Specialists, Linda Henningsen, henningsen@sbcglobal.net
, or me. --Pat McNally pmcnally@oznet.ksu.edu
