ANOTHER EXTENSION DISTRICT EFFORT UNDERWAY
Four counties have taken the first official step toward becoming an Extension District, with county commissioners in each county passing a districting resolution. Clay, Cloud, Republic, and Washington counties have agreed to merge their county Extension programs into an Extension District. The new District will become operational in July of 2005 if all requirements are completed successfully. --Jim Lindquist jlindqui@oznet.ksu.edu

HIGGINS' COLLABORATION IS NATIONAL AWARD WINNER
An 18-county educational effort targeting 54,000 older adults has earned Mary Meck Higgins and her collaborators the 2004 Jeanne M. Priester Award. The national award recognizes innovative efforts in health education in multi-county Extension programs. It is presented annually as part of the United States Department of Agriculture's "Healthy People…Healthy Communities" initiative.

Higgins is the first at K-State to receive the Priester Award, which will be presented April 15 in St. Louis.

"The educational campaign targeted the relationship between nutrition and health and having enough money to purchase groceries, and raised the level of awareness about eligibility for the federal Food Stamp Program and local food assistance programs among older Kansans," Higgins said.

Partners in the multi-county project included the North Central-Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging, Inc., Kansas Social and Rehabilitation Services (SRS), K-State Research and Extension county nutrition educators, K-State’s Department of Human Nutrition, and dozens of community-based service providers such as health departments, senior centers, congregate meal sites, Head Start and faith-based programs.

More information on Higgins' project is available in the complete K-State Research and Extension news release at www.oznet.ksu.edu/news . --Paula Peters peters@humec.ksu.edu

WORKERS NEEDED FOR KSRE BOOTH AT THE 3i SHOW IN GREAT BEND
The 3i Show takes place on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, April 22, 23, and 24, at the Great Bend Airport. The show is open each day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Our booth (I-115) is in the Expo-2 Building, along the north wall in the same spot where we have been before.

Steven Graham will bring the table top display and handout materials from campus and be present during all three days of the show. If you would like to attend the 3i Show and also assist in the booth for an hour or more, that would be great. There is no entrance or parking fee.

The 3i Show is a huge farm machinery show which also has some daily programming aimed at spouses. These programs are coordinated by Donna Krug with our Barton County Research and Extension Office. Thus, we see lots of males, females, entire families, and students who attend the show. Our booth will have information from all four Core Mission Themes, plus we may be joined by some of the Watershed Specialists.

Please e-mail Elsa Toburen, etoburen@oznet.ksu.edu , and let her know which day(s) and what time(s) you would like to work in the booth. Thanks for your assistance. --Steven Graham sgraham@oznet.ksu.edu

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION GRANT AVAILABLE
Earth Awareness Researchers for Tomorrow's Habitat (E.A.R.T.H.) is an award winning (NAE4-HA National Communicator and EPA Pollution Prevention Awards), hands-on middle school environmental science curriculum. This grant-funded program is a partnership of the K-State Research and Extension, KDHE's EPA Section 319 Nonpoint Source Pollution Control Grant, and KCARE.

This year, Sedgwick, Miami, Butler, and Kingman Counties began and implemented E.A.R.T.H. into local schools. KDHE has set aside grant funding to bring E.A.R.T.H. to three new counties for this upcoming school  year. Counties or groups of counties that choose to participate in an E.A.R.T.H. pilot program will receive grant funding, technical support from the Sedgwick County E.A.R.T.H. Steering Committee, and a multidisciplinary program that usually fits well into all agents' outcomes and priorities.

The Sedgwick County E.A.R.T.H. Steering Committee would like to invite those who are interested in starting an E.A.R.T.H. program in their county or groups of counties to attend the 2004 E.A.R.T.H. Workshop on April 27 or 28, at 10 a.m. at the Sedgwick County Extension Office, 7001 W. 21st Street N. in Wichita. Come see what 1,800 students are learning about the environment and stewardship!

Please RSVP by April 23, to Nancy Larson, VIP Committee Chairperson, at 316-722-7721, ext. 254; or nlarson@oznet.ksu.edu . If you are unable to attend but would like to receive more information about E.A.R.T.H., please contact Tonya Bronleewe at 316-722-7721, ext. 514; or tonyab@oznet.ksu.edu . --Tonya Bronleewe
