DEADLINE IS JULY 1
The deadline for placing your order for chicks for the 2004 Kansas State Fair Market Broiler Competition is quickly approaching. We need all forms returned by July 1, 2004. You can get a copy of the form at: http://intranet.oznet.ksu.edu/4-h/2004KSFPacket/FairPkt_reduced/Broiler%20order%20form.pdf .

There have been some changes to the broiler project that should be helpful to many. First, all chicks will be mailed straight from the hatchery to your post office. In the past, many contestants found it difficult to come to Manhattan to pick up chicks. Also, if you enter a pen of broilers at the show, you may choose to donate the birds rather than return the next week to take them home. This will save a trip for some contestants while helping out the food shelter.

The price of the chicks has gone up slightly. This is for a) postage, and b) banding. Each chick will arrive with its own wing band applied at the hatchery. Contestants will no longer need to locate leg bands. The wing bands help us be sure that the chicks entered were from our intended source.

Finally, please remember that Market Broilers will NOT be required to show proof of testing. If you have any questions, please contact Scott Beyer at 785-532-1201. --Tamie Redding tredding@oznet.ksu.edu

4-H PROGRAMMING IN EXTENSION DISTRICTS
A committee chaired by Alan Ladd was charged with beginning the process of thinking through issues related to 4-H programming in a District governance structure. We want to thank Alan and all the committee members for taking on this important responsibility. We want the benefit of everyone's wisdom on organization and management of the 4-H program as additional Extension Districts form across the state.

A draft report of committee recommendations was distributed electronically to all agents last week. Since Alan has moved on to Iowa State, please respond with comments and suggestions by July 9 to Northeast Area 4-H Specialist Diane Mack, dmack@oznet.ksu.edu .

Your thoughts and suggestions are very important as we work to develop a strong 4-H program within the Extension District governance structure. --Jim Lindquist jlindqui@oznet.ksu.edu

NEW FOCUS FOR RECRUITMENT ISSUE OF KANSAS 4-H JOURNAL
The 4-H Marketing Action Team wants to remind you that this year's recruitment issue of the Kansas 4-H Journal is written for parents who are considering 4-H.

The articles focus on information to help them learn more about 4-H including life skill development, club meetings, recognition, events and activities, and myths about 4-H. We've even included a personal letter from a current 4-H parent on how 4-H has impacted their family.

We want all families who receive the Journal to pass it on, share it with a family and invite them to join. If you want additional copies of this issue (4H 851) it is on the September 2004 New Publications order form that is due July 1. --Diane D. Mack dmack@oznet.ksu.edu
