USDA NEW
COMMUNITIES GRANT AWARD ENCOURAGES PHYSICALLY ACTIVE LIFESTYLES
Elaine Johannes, with Community
Health Institute and 4-H Youth Development; and Carol Fink, also with
4-H Youth Development/FNP; have been awarded a 5-year USDA New
Communities grant to implement evidence-based strategies that help teens
adopt physically active lifestyles while influencing physical activity
opportunities in their communities.
The "Kansas Teen Leadership for
Physically Active Lifestyles" project will establish youth
development programs in Morris, Ellsworth and Meade counties that
connect teen leaders to young children in afterschool settings for
increased physical activity. Local teens will work with community groups
directed by Extension professionals Ann Sparke, Loy James, Michelle
Staudinger, Brent Goss, Craig Gross and Christine McPheter, with support
from a team of state and area specialists to develop the youth health
project that can then be replicated across Kansas.
Johannes and Fink competed nationally for
the $150,000 annual grant which was also awarded to projects in South
Dakota, New Hampshire, Maryland, Alaska and Florida.
For more information, contact Carol Fink,
